The Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels and Feedstocks Office is hosting an informational webinar on the recently announced Accelerating Scale-up and Pre-piloting of Emerging Chemical Technologies (ASPECT) funding opportunity on Friday, September 11, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. ET. The funding opportunity provides up to $58 million to fund research, development, and pre-pilot testing of innovative chemical technologies that use alternative and waste feedstocks and accelerate domestic chemical manufacturing.

February 6, 2025—Bioprocessing Separations Input and Innovation Forum
The BETO Bioprocessing Separations Consortium held a webinar on February 6, 2025, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. CT (2 p.m. to 5 p.m. ET) for the Bioprocessing Separations Input and Innovations Forum.
This free, virtual forum explored technical opportunities, identified knowledge gaps, and prioritized separation challenges related to bioprocessing. Stakeholders from industry, research institutions, universities, national laboratories, and other government agencies participated. The forum aimed to outline a research agenda that will guide innovation in separation processes, enabling more efficient and scalable bioenergy systems.

January 29, 2025—ChemCatBio Webinar— An Introduction to Programmable Catalysis for Chemical Energy Technology
The DOE Bioenergy Technologies Office's Chemical Catalysis for Bioenergy Consortium (ChemCatBio) held a webinar on January 29, 2025, on programmable catalysis for chemical energy technology.
In this webinar, Paul Dauenhauer—who is a University of Minnesota Distinguished McKnight University professor and directs the Center for Programmable Energy Catalysis, a DOE Energy Frontier Research Center—introduced concepts of programmable chemistry and presented experimental and computational results, the design of experimental catalytic devices, and the principles associated with this emerging field of chemistry. January 22, 2025—Informational Webinar: SPARC Notice of Funding Opportunity Announcement
BETO announced up to $23 million in funding to support research, development and demonstration (RD&D) of domestic chemicals and fuels from biomass and waste resources. The SPARC NOFO supports research and development (R&D) of domestic chemicals and fuels from a variety of biomass and waste resources. Producing chemicals and propane and/or liquid petroleum gas (LPG) from renewable feedstocks will help to secure domestic supply chains, support rural economies, and improve the nation’s competitiveness in the biotechnology and biomanufacturing industry.

October 16, 2024—BOTTLE™️ Consortium Webinar—Using Analysis to Guide Plastic Circularity
DOE’s Bio-Optimized Technologies to keep Thermoplastics out of Landfills and the Environment (BOTTLE™️) consortium is funded by DOE’s Advanced Materials & Manufacturing Technologies Office and Bioenergy Technologies Office. The consortium conducts analysis-guided R&D to change the way we recycle plastics. But what does analysis really mean? October 2, 2024—Informational Webinar: FY24 Scale-Up of Integrated Biorefineries Funding Opportunity Announcement
The U.S. Department of Energy Bioenergy Technologies Office announced $12 million in funding to support the advancement of integrated biorefinery technologies to lower emissions in the transportation and industrial sector. This funding opportunity announcement, FY24 Scale-Up of Integrated Biorefineries, will reduce technology uncertainty and demonstrate bioenergy technologies that produce low carbon intensity biofuels and biochemicals, particularly sustainable aviation fuels, using biomass and waste resources.

September 16, 2024—Informational Webinar: FCIC FY25 Industry Partnership Call
BETO is overseeing a call for industry partnerships to connect industry stakeholders with the capabilities of the Feedstock-Conversion Interface Consortium (FCIC). This funding opportunity will provide resources that allow partners to collaborate with FCIC researchers to address the cost and risk impacts of feedstock and process variability across the bioenergy and bioproducts value chain. Research areas may include biomass supply, handling, transport, storage, preprocessing, and initial conversion.

August 23, 2024—Informational Webinar: Wood Heater Phase 2 Cooperative Research and Development Agreement
BETO will fund a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) to accelerate wood heater innovation, reduce wood heater pollutants and develop the next generation of efficient and clean wood heaters. Up to $2 million will be available for Phase 2 of this competitively selected CRADA call, administered by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) and Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). Up to four projects will be selected with a project duration of 12–24 months, and applicants are expected to provide 20% cost share of the requested funding.

The Bioenergy Technologies Office's Chemical Catalysis for Bioenergy Consortium (ChemCatBio) held a webinar on artificial intelligence (AI) for catalysis on June 12, 2024. AI has the potential to play a crucial role in accelerated catalyst design, discovery, and optimization of chemical processes. With the help of a range of AI tools—such as machine learning, deep learning, and large language models—researchers can uncover useful guidelines for designing new and improved catalysts for both low- and high-technology readiness level research activities. May 30, 2024—Informational Webinar: Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Grand Challenge: Building Supply Chains Request for Information (RFI) Summary Report
BETO held an informational webinar on May 30, 2024, on the recently released SAF Grand Challenge: Building Supply Chains RFI Summary Report.
The report, published on May 23, 2024, summarizes stakeholder responses to the RFI. The RFI was released in an effort to understand barriers and opportunities related to the “Building Supply Chains” action area of the SAF Grand Challenge Roadmap. The RFI requested feedback from stakeholders across the SAF supply chain—from feedstock production through final end use, and all points in between. BETO and Vehicle Technologies Office (VTO) held an informational webinar on May 10, 2024, for the WASTE: Waste Analysis and Strategies for Transportation End-Uses funding announcement opportunity (FOA). DOE announced up to $17.5 million in federal funding to develop cost-effective strategies for communities to sustainably manage and recover potential renewable energy sources from their waste streams. This FOA will support municipalities and transit authorities with waste-to-energy solutions for converting organic waste into feedstocks for various transportation fuel products that can benefit the local energy economy. April 17, 2024—Informational Webinar: MACRO: Mixed Algae Conversion Research Opportunity - Funding Opportunity Announcement
BETO and Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM) announced the MACRO: Mixed Algae Conversion Research Opportunity funding opportunity announcement to advance mixed algae development for low-carbon biofuels and bioproducts. The FOA will award up to $18.8 million to address research and development (R&D) challenges in converting algae, such as seaweeds and other wet waste feedstocks, to biofuels and bioproducts that can lower emissions in the domestic transportation, industry, and communities. April 16, 2024—2023 Billion-Ton Report: An Assessment of U.S. Renewable Carbon Resources Informational Webinar
Discover how key findings from the recently released 2023 Billion-Ton Report (BT23) advance the U.S. BETO and Oak Ridge National Laboratory held an informational webinar to dive deeper into BT23 and to discuss the potential biomass resources available in the United States.
BT23 shows that the U.S. could sustainably triple its production of biomass to more than 1 billion tons per year and highlights the importance of diversifying biomass resources to support the U.S. bioeconomy. The report—the fourth in a series of assessments of potential biomass resources since 2005—finds that 1 billion tons of biomass could satisfy over 100% of the projected demand for airplane fuel in the country, allowing the U.S. to lower emissions in the aviation industry with sustainable aviation fuel. March 4, 2024—FY24 Inflation Reduction Act Funding for Advanced Biofuels FOA Informational Session
BETO and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) jointly announced $9.4 million in funding to support high-impact advanced biofuels R&D projects. This FOA will improve the performance and reduce the cost of biofuel production technologies, scale up production systems in partnership with industry, and accelerate the nation’s bioeconomy.

January 24, 2024—ChemCatBio Webinar Series - Addressing Rigor and Reproducibility in Thermal, Heterogeneous Catalysis
There has been growing recognition in the heterogeneous catalysis community that mechanisms are needed to improve the rigor and reproducibility (R&R) of experimental measurements and encourage alignment of the broader research community with a common core of best practices. In 2022, researchers held a National Science Foundation-sponsored workshop on R&R in thermal, heterogeneous catalysis. The workshop focused on discussing the state of these issues in the field, developing recommendations to enhance the rigor and reproducibility of data reported in the literature, and compiling collective knowledge about best practices for common methods of study in the field and current knowledge about the availability of benchmark materials.
In this webinar, panelists—including John West (Johnson Matthey), Neil Schweitzer (Northwestern University), Rajamani Gounder (Purdue University), and Robert Rioux (Pennsylvania State University)—discussed the current state of the field, why the topic is important for industry and bioenergy applications, outcomes from the workshop, and planned future activities researchers are undertaking to help the catalysis community address R&R issues in the future. The Historically Black Community Colleges Bioenergy Research and Education Bridge (BRIDGES) Webinar was held on August 31, 2023. During this webinar, BRIDGES representatives from BETO, Argonne National Laboratory, and Idaho National Laboratory showcased the newly launched BRIDGES program, a free bioenergy case study-based toolkit that helps educators encourage students to explore the world of renewable energy. This webinar also featured a presentation from DOE’s Office of Science, which included updates on the office’s collaborations with national laboratories and academia as well as other relevant program updates.

BETO and the Consortium for Computational Physics and Chemistry (CCPC) held a webinar that discussed ways to optimize bioenergy technologies and scale industrial processes cost-effectively.
CCPC researchers apply fundamental science and high-performance computing to discover new materials for bioenergy applications and identify opportunities for increasing the efficiency and yield of production processes. In this webinar, an Oak Ridge National Laboratory principal investigator, as well as three industry leaders, shared their experience working with the CCPC on science-based solutions to accelerate scale-up and application of their products.

BETO and the Agile BioFoundry (ABF) provided a webinar highlighting technologies used by the ABF to accelerate biomanufacturing. January 20, 2022—Biomass Feedstock Supply Challenges and Solutions with Idaho National Laboratory
Biorefineries are emerging in the United States to help transform our waste and biomass feedstocks into renewable fuels and products. However, a lot has to go right throughout the feedstock supply chain so that these biofuels and bioproducts are cost-effective and of high-quality and -quantity compared to their petroleum-based counterparts.
BETO held a webinar titled, Biomass Feedstock Supply Challenges and Solutions with Idaho National Laboratory. Drs. Lynn Wendt, Bioenergy program lead, and Luke Williams, research scientist at Idaho National Laboratory, discussed feedstock supply chain challenges and how INL’s research is generating solutions.
Topics discussed during this webinar included biorefinery solutions centered around:
- Feedstock supply and logistics.
- Developing new preprocessing strategies coupled with modeling.
- Engineering conversion-ready feedstocks.
- Finding new co-products early in the supply chain.
Drs. Wendt and Williams also discussed INL's Biomass Feedstock National User Facility and how recent upgrades can provide solutions to some biomass feedstock challenges and enable scale-up of biorefineries.

November 4, 2021—Community Waste Management Technical Assistance Forum–Exploring Solutions to Convert Waste to Energy and Bioproducts
As communities work to reduce their emissions, many are exploring solutions to not only cut down on waste but to convert it to energy and other products.
In 2021, BETO and NLR provided technical assistance to 18 communities across the United States. Over the past several months, these partnerships explored a multitude of topics in conjunction with NLR experts, including resource assessment, economic trade-off analysis, technology evaluation, and many others.
BETO hosted a forum with a panel of community experts involved in the partnerships to share updates about the program and plans for further technical assistance in 2022. The BETO forum included a series of presentations from several partnering communities, followed by a Q&A session to hear about how various communities are looking to tackle their organic waste challenges and how NLR can aid in this planning.
October 26, 2021—How Can New Simulation and Modeling Tools Accelerate Fuel-Engine Co-Optimization?
Fuel blend performance can be evaluated much faster using simulations rather than actual engines. The Co-Optima team has developed robust and well-validated tools to accurately capture fuel-engine interactions, improve the efficacy of predictions, and reduce computation time and costs. These new tools include high-fidelity computational fluid dynamic simulations and lower-order models that leverage acceleration techniques based on high-performance computing and machine learning.

October 21, 2021—How DOE is Supporting Small Businesses to Strengthen Community Partnerships and Workforce Development
BETO, the Office of Technology Transitions (OTT), and Office of Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer (SBIR/STTR) programs gave a webinar to learn how DOE is to support small businesses through the SBIR/STTR programs. September 16, 2021—How ABPDU Is Training the Next Generation of Bioprocess Engineers
BETO hosted a webinar on how LBNL is partnering with the University of California, Berkeley to train the next generation of bioprocessing engineers to enable the U.S. bioeconomy. Biotech and bioprocessing play a key role in mitigating emissions, but these industries face a pressing need for experienced people who can bring bio-based products to market.
A new college course taking place at LBNL’s Advanced Biofuels and Bioproducts Process Development Unit aims to meet this need by providing students with hands-on experience with industry-relevant bioprocessing equipment. Part of UC Berkeley’s Master of Bioprocess Engineering program, the course prepares students for careers in the biopharmaceutical, industrial biotech, or food tech industries.

July 15, 2021—Idaho National Laboratory: Providing Access to High-Quality Education and Training
Speakers Michelle Bingham, director of university partnerships, and Jennifer Jackson, program manager K-12 STEM, of INL provided an overview of how INL is implementing a workforce development and educational strategy that provides students with real-life work experiences where they can apply academic and technical skills.
INL’s K-12 Education Program serves students in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and provides equitable access to STEM learning and work-based learning opportunities for populations historically underrepresented in STEM education and careers. These include rural and remote, economically disadvantaged, and racial, ethnic, and gender minority students in Idaho.
From interns to postdoctoral researchers, INL’s outreach team implements workforce planning and development strategies to enable successful careers for post-high school students. The goals are to foster a future energy workforce and educate INL’s existing workforce as the United States moves into a new era in the deployment of renewable energy technologies.

May 11, 2021—Biomass Analysis Technologies Directed Funding Opportunity
The Biomass Analysis Technologies (BAT) team at NLR develops analytical methods for characterizing the composition of biomass feedstocks and intermediate products related to the production of biofuels, bioproducts, or biopower. These methods can support BETO in advancing bioenergy solutions geared toward lowering CO2 emissions in critical sectors of the economy. With funding from BETO, the BAT team is overseeing a Directed Funding Opportunity (DFO) to collaborate with NLR on three specific areas of interest: analytical methods for mixed carbohydrate steams; rapid analysis methods and sensors for mixed carbohydrate and lignocellulosic streams; and analytical methods for characterization of wet organic wastes.
The BAT team hosted a webinar to discuss the analytical expertise and capabilities that are available, and to answer questions about the DFO program.
May 4, 2021—Sustainable Aviation Fuel and U.S. Airport Infrastructure
Worldwide, aviation accounts for 2% of all human-made CO2 emissions and 12% of all transportation CO2 emissions. Airports and airlines are considering alternative fuel options to meet environmental goals. This webinar discussed SAF basics, production pathways, and current availability; ASTM International requirements for SAF and fuel blending impacts; and options for delivering SAF to airports.

April 29, 2021—Co-Optima Capstone Webinar: How can fuels and combustion reduce pollutants from future diesel engines?
Mixing-controlled compression-ignition engines—such as diesel engines—have many desirable attributes, including high fuel-conversion efficiencies. Nevertheless, these engines produce emissions of soot and nitrogen oxides (NOx) that must be mitigated by emissions control technology. This webinar discussed identification of bioblendstocks with low-net-carbon emissions and desirable fuel properties and approaches for curtailing soot, NOx, and net-carbon emissions by combining these renewable fuels with a new combustion technology called ducted fuel injection.

March 25, 2021—Co-Optima Capstone Webinar: How can co-optimized fuels and spark-ignition (SI) engines enhance efficiency while reducing carbon emissions of light-duty (LD) passenger vehicles?
SI engines using gasoline are projected to remain a significant percentage of the LD vehicle fleet for decades. The Co-Optima initiative has demonstrated that it is possible to improve the efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of SI engines with higher amounts of biofuel blend components chosen to improve key fuel properties. This webinar described Co-Optima’s approach to the development of selection criteria and identification of these blendstocks, as well as analysis of their potential impacts on the LD SI fuels and engines.

March 18, 2021—Waste-to-Energy Technical Assistance Program
BETO and NLR launched an organic Waste-to-Energy Technical Assistance Program for local governments. Organic waste streams, such as food waste and wastewater sludge, represent significant environmental, economic, and social challenges for municipalities. BETO has funded analyses assessing these waste streams and various aspects of their management, such as existing uses and costs of disposal. Given that these waste streams require local solutions, this technical assistance program provides municipalities with the most relevant data for their decision-making. BETO will fund up to 40 hours of subject matter assistance to municipalities topics.

February 11, 2021—FCIC Webinar: Developing Modeling Tools for the Emerging Biorefinery Industry
In this webinar, two FCIC researchers discussed computational modeling approaches to predict the behavior of biomass feedstocks.
Dr. Yidong Xia from Idaho National Laboratory provided an overview of the work within the FCIC to develop first-principles-based design tools derived from validated computational models describing the transport of granular biomass feedstocks in hoppers and chutes, and the comminution of biomass feedstocks in milling equipment. Dr. Peter Ciesielski from NLR discussed a novel multiscale computational modeling approach using molecular and coarse-grained dynamics to predict macroscale physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of biomass from molecular scale structure and composition and tissue-scale anatomy. December 9, 2020—FCIC Webinar: Developing First-Principles Tools and Knowledge for the Emerging Biorefinery Industry
BETO's Feedstock-Conversion Interface Consortium kicked off a new webinar series. The FCIC is a collaborative, interdisciplinary effort among nine DOE national laboratories. The goal of the FCIC is to develop science-based knowledge and tools to understand and mitigate the effects of biomass feedstock and process variability on biorefineries. The first webinar, “Developing First-Principles Tools and Knowledge for the Emerging Biorefinery Industry,” provided an introduction to the FCIC by NLR principal investigator Dr. Ed Wolfrum. Dr. Wolfrum will present a high-level overview of each of the FCIC’s research areas, including materials of construction, feedstock variability, and process performance. BETO has a mission to help transform the nation's renewable and abundant biomass resources into cost-competitive, high-performance biofuels, bioproducts, and biopower. In FY 2021, BETO is focusing on broadening participation-related topics for its Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) funding opportunity. The topic titles were “Small Business Bioenergy Technologies Increasing Community Partnerships” and “Cultivating a More Competitive Bioeconomy through Strengthening Small Business Workforces.” The webinar included a Q&A session.
April 16, 2020—DOE Women Leading Renewable Energy Collaborations
Women across various offices at DOE lead the agency in addressing America’s energy challenges. To highlight past, current, and future examples a webinar featured DOE leaders from the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy: Valerie Reed, deputy director of BETO, Valri Lightner, deputy director of the Advanced Manufacturing Office, and Alison Hewett, a senior research analyst in the Water Power Technologies Office. These women have a combined 60 years of experience, representing a positive force that is changing the framework of research, development, and adoption of energy-related technologies and practices to drive U.S. economic competitiveness and energy productivity. They focus on improving energy performance, lowering costs, and accelerating market entry for new technologies through collaborations with industry, academia, and government. The Chemical Catalysis for Bioenergy Consortium (ChemCatBio) and BETO hosted a webinar, Addressing Unique Catalyst Deactivation Challenges for Converting Biomass-Derived Feedstocks. In this presentation, investigator Huamin Wang from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory presented an overview of the unique properties of biomass-derived intermediates that could cause catalyst deactivation issues and possible mitigation approaches. Examples of previous and current ChemCatBio research and development efforts showed how these issues are addressed was discussed.

February 5, 2019–IEA Bioenergy Webinar: Perception and Positions of Stakeholders Toward Bioenergy
The International Energy Agency Bioenergy Technology Collaboration Program (IEA Bioenergy TCP) hosted the international webinar entitled Perception and Positions of Stakeholders Toward Bioenergy presented by Thuy Mai-Moulin and Uwe Fritsche, and moderated by Prof. Dr. Martin Junginger. In this webinar, international stakeholders’ viewpoints and positions toward bioenergy were presented along with an opportunity to discuss the results of several regional case studies. Recommendations on how to engage more successfully with a broad range of stakeholders so that policies and governance are perceived as legitimate and information to help build social capital, trust, and support among all stakeholders was provided. Lastly, presenters outlined how this work will be continued in IEA Bioenergy in the coming years.

December 6, 2018—Biomass Production and Water Quality in the Mississippi River Basin
In the Biomass Production and Water Quality in the Mississippi River Basin webinar, ANL and ORNL jointly presented modeling and analyses of potential implications of biomass production on nutrients and sediments in each of the six tributaries of the Mississippi River Basin. Presenters described the methodology, system boundary, and data sources and presented water quality estimates for nitrogen, phosphorus, and suspended sediments under historical land use in the Upper Mississippi River Basin, Missouri River Basin, Ohio River Basin, Arkansas White and Red River Basin, Tennessee River Basin, and Lower Mississippi River Basin. The webinar also provided an estimate of potential changes in water quality and quantity under future biomass production scenarios and discussed opportunities for integrating conservation practices with biomass production.
September 26, 2018—CatCost: An Estimation Tool to Aid Commercialization and R&D Decisions for Catalytic Materials
Catalyst costs can significantly drive up the costs of biomass conversion processes; reducing uncertainty in catalyst cost can inform researchers as they identify new biofuel pathways that may be commercially viable. CatCost, a catalyst cost estimation tool by the Chemical Catalysis for Bioenergy consortium (ChemCatBio), has been developed to more accurately estimate costs early in the catalyst development process prior to commercialization. CatCost incorporates industry standard estimation methods into a user-friendly spreadsheet and web tool to be distributed online free of charge. This webinar detailed the methods used by CatCost, demonstrated how it was validated using commercially available materials (e.g., FCC, hydrotreating catalysts), and provided pre-commercial estimate examples (e.g., colloidally synthesized nanoparticles).
September 17, 2018—Freshwater Availability for Bioenergy Production in the United States – Assessment and Issues
In the Freshwater Availability for Bioenergy Production in the United States – Assessment and Issues webinar, ANL presented an assessment of freshwater resource availability for U.S. production of bioenergy, as well as discussed the potential implications for non-bioenergy sectors. Presenters described the methodology, system boundary, and data sources; presented freshwater resources (rain water, renewable surface, and ground water) used for terrestrial feedstock at the county level in the United States; provided an estimate of freshwater resource demand under future bioenergy production scenarios; and discussed the role of effective rain and soil moisture in water analysis.
June 27, 2018—ChemCatBio Webinar: Accelerating the Catalyst Development Cycle
The Chemical Catalysis for Bioenergy Consortium held a webinar called Accelerating the Catalyst Development Cycle. The realization of routes to fuels and chemicals from renewable feedstocks such as biomass relies on the effective transformation of highly functionalized compounds into targeted precursors and products using low-cost, earth-abundant catalysts that maintain performance under severe conditions. Addressing these challenges requires advanced catalysts with controlled active sites that promote desired transformations, while resisting deactivation, and that can be produced cost-effectively at relevant scales. This webinar highlighted transition metal carbides as a class of materials that has the potential to meet these goals. It demonstrated how the integration of predictive computational modeling, tailored materials synthesis, and in-situ characterization capabilities within the ChemCatBio Consortium is accelerating the development of these complex but promising catalysts.
May 8, 2018—IEA Bioenergy Webinar: Biofuels for the Marine Sector: New Opportunities and New Challenges
The International Energy Agency (IEA) Bioenergy Technology Collaboration Programme international webinar, Biofuels for the Marine Sector: New Opportunities and New Challenges, gave an overview of the maritime transportation sector, including its fuel and engine types, the fuel supply infrastructure, and the regulations on fuel specifications and CO2 emissions. The feasibility of current biofuels including their properties and supply was discussed and opportunities for new types of biofuel were presented.

April 19, 2018—Bioproducts, Grown and Made in America
The webinar, Bioproducts, Grown and Made in America, focused on bioproducts that are made in America from renewable resources like plants, algae, and wastes. Participants learned how scientific research and innovation is advancing use of materials in everyday products and emerging frontiers like 3D printing. Speakers from BETO, DOE, ORNL, and SNL discussed how science and agriculture are setting the stage to enhance the American tradition of ingenuity and productivity.
March 7, 2018—ChemCatBio Webinar: Linking Catalyst and Process Development with Techno-Economic Analysis in the Conversion of Biomass to High-Octane Gasoline
Recent ChemCatBio research has focused on catalyst and process development to produce C4–C7 hydrocarbons from dimethyl ether over a copper-modified beta zeolite (Cu/BEA) catalyst. In the Chemical Catalysis for Bioenergy Consortium’s (ChemCatBio’s) webinar: “Linking Catalyst and Process Development with Techno-Economic Analysis in the Conversion of Biomass to High-Octane Gasoline,” Dr. Dan Ruddy demonstrated how techno-economic analysis of the process can be used to direct catalyst development research to target specific performance advancements, and similarly, how performance improvements exhibited by the Cu/BEA catalyst affect the resulting economic viability of the process. ChemCatBio is a national laboratory–led research and development consortium, funded by BETO, which is dedicated to identifying and overcoming catalysis challenges for biomass conversion processes.

The international webinar—Methane Emissions from Biogas Plants—was presented by Dr. Jan Liebetrau. It is part of the International Energy Agency (IEA) Bioenergy webinar series. IEA is an organization that studies energy issues related to reliability, and affordability. During the webinar, participants learned about IEA Task 37’s new report on methane emissions from biogas plants.

As part of the Co-Optimization of Fuels and Engines initiative, BETO held a webinar on September 14. The Co-Optimization of Fuels and Engines (Co-Optima)—National Lab Project Overview webinar provided an in-depth overview of the Co-Optima National Lab Consortium Project. Speakers discussed co-optimization efforts for nearer-term advanced spark-ignition engine and longer-term advanced compression-ignition engine technologies. This includes information on the methodology used to select fuel candidates, ongoing simulation and experimental research, and efforts to identify and address deployment opportunities and challenges.
September 1, 2016—International Energy Agency Webinar: Cascading of Woody Biomass Definitions, Policies, and Effects on International Trade
As part of the International Energy Agency (IEA) Bioenergy Internal Webinar Series, BETO held a webinar on September 1, 2016. The international webinar—Cascading of woody biomass definitions, policies, and effects on international trade—was presented by Olle Olsson, research fellow at the Stockholm Environment Institute, and Lena Bruce, a business developer at Swedish forest company Sveaskog. IEA is an autonomous international organization that studies energy issues related to reliability, and affordability. The webinar discussed recent research published on the cascading of woody biomass, or the prioritization of woody biomass usage, and informed debate around its implementation and policies.
August 17, 2016—Co-Optimization of Fuels and Engines FOA Informational Webinar
In an effort to accelerate the introduction of affordable, scalable, and high-performance fuels for use in high-efficiency, low-emission engines, BETO and VTO announced up to $7 million in project funding in support of the Co-Optimization of Fuels and Engines initiative. An informational webinar was held August 17. Standard application questions regarding EERE and FOA procedures were discussed.

Technology leads and researchers from BETO and ORNL hosted a webinar on July 21. The webinar featured an interactive overview of the 2016 Billion-Ton Report, which provides detailed data about national biomass resources and new analyses that incorporate the cost of biomass delivered to biorefineries. May 5, 2016—Building the Billion-Ton Bioeconomy
The Biomass Research and Development Board Operations Committee held a bioeconomy listening session on May 5. During the listening session, Building a Billion Ton Bioeconomy in the United States, attendees were encouraged to provide their thoughts and comments and to ask questions about the potential to grow the national bioeconomy. Listening session hosts from the U.S. Departments of Agriculture and Energy solicited input from participants on opportunities that may exist and challenges that need to be confronted to achieve a focused and successful bioeconomy vision for the United States. This listening session used ThinkTank collaborative technology to gather input from participants.
In preparation for the session, it was strongly encouraged that attendees reviewed the recently released Federal Activities Report on the Bioeconomy. The report is a product of an interagency collaboration under the Biomass R&D Board, which includes members from federal agencies such as the U.S. Departments of Agriculture, Energy, Interior, Transportation, and Defense; the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency; the National Science Foundation; and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. The report was prepared to emphasize the significant potential for a stronger U.S. bioeconomy through the production and use of biofuels, renewable chemicals, biobased products, and biomass heat and power. The report also delves into the wide-ranging, federally funded activities that are currently helping to bolster the bioeconomy.
April 20, 2016—Field-to-Fleet: How Does Feedstock Type Affect Biofuels Conversion?
In honor of Earth Week, DOE presented a live webinar about BETO's Field-to-Fleet project and its outcomes to date on April 20. Field-to-Fleet is part of BETO’s larger Thermochemical Feedstock Interface Project and is a joint Idaho National Laboratory, National Laboratory of the Rockies, and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory project designed to determine how feedstock type affects various thermochemical biofuels conversion processes. The multi-year project has quantified the impacts that feedstock type has on hydrotreating of pyrolysis oil, and is now ready to apply the methodology to other thermochemical conversion pathways. Participants learned about Field-to-Fleet outcomes, impacts, and opportunities for partnership. Presenters included laboratory project leads and BETO's Conversion Team.

December 16, 2015—Demonstration of NLR's Bioenergy Atlas Tools
NLR hosted a free webinar on December 16 demonstrating how to use the BioEnergy Atlas tools. BETO funded the BioEnergy Atlas tools, which include the BioFuels and BioPower Atlases. These tools are designed as first-pass visualization tools that allow users to view many bioenergy and related datasets in Google Maps. Users can query and download map data and view incentives and state energy data, as well as select an area on the map for estimated biofuels or biopower production potential. Biofuel is the only viable substitute for petroleum-based liquid transportation fuel in the near term. In order for the U.S. bioeconomy to expand, it will require increased consideration of the development of commercial bioproducts. Bioproducts can also make everyday products, like plastic, that enhance our quality of life. As the algae industry continues to invest in the research and development of genetic modification (GM) to optimize biofuels production, biocontainment systems and regulatory policies will play key roles in avoiding potential impacts on the environment. Biocontainment of outdoor algae is challenging due to their small size, ability to disperse over long distances, resistance to desiccation, and the high concentration of cells in pond cultures. GM policies developed for agricultural crops provide a framework for the development of regulation for GM algae. This webinar discussed these issues, as well as examples of algal GM traits engineered by Los Alamos National Laboratory to enhance photosynthesis and biomass productivity with respect to risk analysis. Dr. Blake Simmons of SNL presented on the discovery, design, and optimization of an ionic liquid pretreatment technology that can efficiently process hardwoods, softwoods, agricultural residues, and other energy crops. The webinar featured the latest developments in the approach of using ionic liquids to convert biomass into sugar, as well as a highlight of further research on enzymes and microbes that are compatible with ionic liquid technologies.
April 15, 2013—Computational Studies on Lignocellulose Deconstruction
Dr. Gnana S. Gnanakaran from LANL presented his team's molecular research on lignocellulosic biomass. Lignocellulose is a promising carbon-neutral source of energy that is sourced from non-edible feedstocks. The webinar featured LANL's novel application of mathematical modeling and computational analysis to gain a better understanding of cellular and molecular biology. This approach provides one of the most in-depth looks at how lignocellulosic biomass functions, reacts, and changes, which can advance future applied studies in conversion and processing methods.
December 12, 2012—Upgrading Renewable Carbohydrates For the Production of High Energy Density Fuels
Presenters from LANL highlighted the development of hydrocarbon fuels as renewable alternatives to petrochemical feedstocks. With decreasing global production of crude oil, it is essential to our nation that renewable alternatives to petrochemical feedstocks for hydrocarbon fuels are developed. A constant, reliable supply of these fuels would help ensure that the nationwide transportation of food, medicine, and consumer goods remains uninterrupted, regardless of sociopolitical conflict. Lignocellulose is a promising carbon-neutral source of energy derived from wood, agricultural waste, and woody grasses. The carbohydrates D-glucose (C6), L-arabinose (C5), and D-xylose (C5) are readily obtained from the hydrolysis of lignocellulose and constitute the most abundant renewable organic carbon source on the planet. Because they are naturally produced on such a large scale, these sugars have the greatest potential to displace petrochemical-derived transportation fuel. Researchers discussed investigations into a potentially transformational strategy aimed at obtaining high energy density hydrocarbon fuels from non-food-based carbohydrate sources.
December 5, 2012—Global Solutions for Global Challenges: International Collaborations to Advance Bioenergy Research
Presenters highlighted the progress of ongoing research collaborations among scientists supported by the Energy Department and researchers from China, Brazil, Canada, Finland, and other countries around the world. Scientists from the NLR, INL, PNNL, and ORNL discussed collaborations that hold the potential for innovations in feedstock logistics and biomass conversion technologies that will help accelerate the commercialization of advanced biofuels. The presenters provided the results of exchanging best practices and benchmarking current biofuels systems with metrics and trends in trade and commoditization. Finally, the webinar featured collaborative work supporting the International Organization for Standardization and other initiatives attempting to define metrics and indicators to foster robust international markets for biofuels.August 15, 2012—Assessing Impacts of Bioenergy Production on Regional Water Resource Use and Availability
This session—intended for local, county, and state water managers; working farmers and biofuel leaders; students and professionals in the fuel and energy sectors; and policymakers—provided an overview of requirements for water resources, as well as a discussion of the environmental impacts attributable to wastewater from biofuels production. Dr. May Wu from ANL presented case studies to highlight the unique aspects of the water footprint of biofuels, thereby demonstrating the complex nature of the energy-water relationship.April 23, 2012—Educational Opportunities in Bioenergy
This focused on educational opportunities at two DOE national labs: NLR and ORNL. During the webinar, experts from NLR and ORNL showcased specific bioenergy research programs and exciting educational opportunities available for undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral students at the labs. The webinar topics featured synopses of these bioenergy research programs, highlights of the benefits to students participating in them, and a list of important contacts to help students get involved. Webcast presenters included current and former student participants and leaders of the bioenergy research programs from both national labs, who provided information on the programs and their experiences.February 9, 2012—Conversion Technologies for Advanced Biofuels Roadmapping Workshop Webinar
This focused on the results from the Conversion Technologies for Advanced Biofuels (CTAB) Roadmapping Workshop, hosted by the Bioenergy Technologies Office in Arlington, Virginia, in December 2011. Critical technical barrier areas and research activities identified during the workshop were a central theme of the webinar and were presented by the subject matter experts who led the breakout sessions. The webinar also highlighted talks on broad technical issues (such as separation and catalysis) and innovative methods of biomass processing (such as hybrid conversion systems and lignin utilization). The information collected at the CTAB Workshop will form the basis of an upcoming roadmap document on research challenges and research and development activities for the commercial development of advanced biofuel technologies, slated for publication in late 2012.
September 22, 2011—The U.S. Billion-Ton Update: Biomass Supply for a Bioenergy and Bioproducts Industry
This featured the 2011 U.S. Billion-Ton Update: Biomass Supply for a Bioenergy and Bioproducts Industry, a report detailing biomass feedstock potential nationwide. Authors of the report presented the purpose, approach, and major assumptions of the 2011 Billion-Ton Update, including how it differs from the 2005 Billion-Ton Study. They discussed the report's findings, as well as how its data might be used by both the public and private sector to grow the bioenergy industry and help achieve President Obama's goals of expanding renewable energy resources and developing alternative fuels for America's transportation sector.
August 30, 2011—Transforming Biomass into Feedstock
This focused on how raw biomass can be processed into consistent and reliable feedstock material. Speakers from the Bioenergy Technologies Office, Office of Science, Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E), Idaho National Laboratory, and other institutions discussed technologies that produce and transform biomass into high-quality, on-spec, densified feedstocks. Speakers addressed the impacts these technologies have on supply chain logistics and feedstock performance for biofuels and biopower applications. Presentations covered both fundamental science related to cell wall formation and function, as well as applied research and development areas, such as engineering plants to produce enzymes that degrade cell walls when activated and increasing field density and productivity, while reducing fertilizer inputs.

May 17, 2011—Global Biofuels Industry - Minimizing Risks and Maximizing Opportunities
This featured an overview of issues related to the development of a global biofuels market. A panel of speakers from Conservation International discussed the results of the DOE-supported Biofuel Crops Project, including identified risks and opportunities for global biofuels production, results of field studies to develop responsible biofuel crop management strategies, and implications for land-use planning, policy, and developing markets.

This featured an overview of the office's ongoing advanced biofuels research, including research on biochemical and thermochemical conversion processes. This session also discussed the progress the National Advanced Biofuels Consortium is making in research, development, and demonstration of process technology strategies to convert biomass feedstock into a form that can be used in a petroleum refinery. These new and innovative approaches can advance the commercialization and adoption of advanced biofuels.
September 8, 2010—The Promise and Challenges of Algae as Renewable Sources of Biofuels
This focused on the office's approach to algal biofuels research and development and included presentations from four representatives of its recently funded consortia. This session also discussed highlights from the National Algal Biofuels Technology Roadmap, which was released by DOE in June 2010.

BRIDGES partnered with the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT) to host the U.S. Department of Energy BRIDGES Bioenergy 101 Workshop from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. ET, on Thursday, October 17, 2024. Educators were introduced to free bioenergy national laboratory research that can be integrated into classrooms and looked inside the Regional Feedstocks Case Study!

Virtual Workshop: Bioenergy Cybersecurity
It is critical that the rapidly emerging U.S. biomanufacturing infrastructure is secure from potential cyber-threats. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) hosted a Bioenergy Cybersecurity Workshop, a virtual event organized by Sandia National Laboratories on September 11, 2023, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm (PST)/1:00 pm to 5:00 pm (EST), to identify cybersecurity risks in biofuel and bioproduct manufacturing, and develop an approach to address these risks.
This workshop raised awareness of the importance of cybersecurity in biomanufacturing safety, operational continuity, and competitiveness. The event consisted of panel presentations by bioprocessing and cybersecurity experts, and facilitated participant discussions. Participants discussed the state of biofuel and bioproduct cybersecurity practices, and the security of bio-based processes to help identify and define cybersecurity technologies and research needed for cybersecure bioenergy production.

TRANSITIONING TO A SUSTAINABLE, CIRCULAR ECONOMY FOR PLASTICS WORKSHOP
The technology, regulatory, and economic landscape related to plastic use and recycling is rapidly changing. The increasing use of plastics coupled with stagnated recycling rates is driving concern over pollution but also represents an opportunity to valorize waste streams enabling efforts to reduce emissions in the U.S. economy.
On June 8-9, 2023, in Seattle, Washington, the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) and Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office (AMMTO) hosted a workshop titled, Transitioning to a Sustainable, Circular Economy for Plastics, to bring stakeholders together from across the plastic value chain to understand the current challenges in transitioning to reusing and recycling plastics in the United States.

DEPLOYING PURPOSE-GROWN ENERGY CROPS FOR SAF WORKSHOP
The Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Grand Challenge is the result of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and other federal government agencies working together to develop a comprehensive strategy for scaling up new technologies to produce SAF on a commercial scale. To meet the goal of supplying 100% of projected domestic aviation jet fuel by 2050, purpose-grown energy crops, including algae, will need to be cultivated on a large scale.
On June 6-7, 2023, in Kansas City, Missouri, the DOE’s Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) hosted a workshop titled Deploying Purpose-Grown Energy Crops for SAF. The workshop discussed successes, challenges, information gaps, opportunities, and novel ideas for deploying these energy crops. Vital results from this workshop will help guide future research and development direction in feedstock innovation to reduce the cost, improve the quality, increase the quantity, and maximize the benefits of these renewable carbon resources.

2023 Project Peer Review
The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE's) Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) held its 2023 Project Peer Review on April 3‒7, 2023. Projects in BETO’s research and development portfolio were presented to the public and systematically reviewed by external subject-matter experts from industry, academia, and federal agencies. Simultaneous review sessions of projects across the BETO technology areas occurred.

Gasification Technology Status and Pathways for Net-Zero Carbon Economy Workshop
On November 30th, 2022, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO), Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM), and National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) held the Status of Gasification Technology of Biomass and Solid Wastes (Waste Coal, Waste Plastics and MSW) and Pathways for Net-Zero Carbon Economy workshop. The workshop assessed the state of gasification technologies currently used or being developed for biomass and solid wastes, in addition to helping BETO, FECM, and NETL address barriers in gasification technology through federally funded research and development. Biomanufacturing for Bio-Advantaged Fuels Meeting
On August 16, 2022, DOE BETO and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) held a meeting on “Biomanufacturing for Bio-Advantaged Fuels.” The meeting focused on biofuel molecules and advances that can create enhanced tunability of these molecular structures, which can create performance advantages. Researchers at LBNL described recent advances in bio-advantaged fuel production, coupling fuel properties modeling, metabolic engineering, process development, and scale-up. Bioenergy’s Role in Soil Carbon Storage Workshop
On March 28–29, 2022 BETO hosted a public virtual workshop to discuss soil carbon storage with a focus on the role of bioenergy. The workshop included discussions about methods for building healthy soils, reduce emissions in agriculture and forestry, and assessing full life cycle emissions associated with generating biomass for bioenergy. Barriers to Scale: Algae Crop Protection Workshop
On April 20–21, 2021, DOE BETO hosted a virtual workshop covering the topic of algae crop protection to facilitate scaling of the algae industry. A major barrier to the scaling and intensification of algal cultivation is the partial or complete loss of productivity due to pests, just like traditional farming. Developing effective strategies to maintain harvest yield over time is essential to meeting BETO’s long-term goals of promoting cost competitive biofuels and bioproducts. Advancing Synergistic Waste Utilization as Biofuels Feedstocks: Preprocessing, Co-products, and Sustainability Workshop
On April 14–15, 2021, DOE BETO hosted a workshop to discuss municipal solid waste streams as a feedstock for biofuels. BETO recognizes that waste streams are promising, but they must meet cost, and quality targets for broad utilization. This free workshop invited stakeholders representing academia, industry, municipalities, and federal agencies involved in waste management, resource and energy recovery, and waste utilization. 2021 Project Peer Review
BETO hosted its virtual 2021 Project Peer Review on March 8‒12, 2021; March 15‒16, 2021; and March 22‒26, 2021. Projects in BETO’s research and development portfolio were presented to the public and systematically reviewed by external subject-matter experts from industry, academia, and federal agencies. Hydrothermal Liquefaction: Path to SAF Workshop
On November 17–19, 2020, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and the Bioenergy Technologies Office hosted the virtual Hydrothermal Liquefaction: Path to SAF Workshop. The objective of this workshop was to identify the role of hydrothermal liquefaction process in producing SAF and to identify the research problems in this area that need to be addressed in the near-term and long-term. Bioeconomy Initiative Forum
On September 15-16, 2020, the Biomass Research and Development (BR&D) Board hosted the Bioeconomy Initiative Forum celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Biomass Research and Development Act. The interactive and public forum was designed to solicit stakeholder input and share the Bioeconomy Initiative’s progress, including accomplishments of the BR&D Board’s Interagency Working Groups, since the release of The Bioeconomy Initiative: Implementation Framework in 2019. Leveraging Existing Bioenergy Data Workshop
On July 21–23, 2020, BETO hosted an online workshop to discuss how to collect and valorize underused datasets and associated knowledge, with the goal of making this information public on existing databases. This workshop attempted to connect industry scientists, data owners, and lawyers with federal government, academic, and National Laboratory representatives to shepherd valuable datasets and other knowledge to be used to maximum benefit. This effort would bolster the growing bioeconomy with industrially-relevant data across the supply chain, and result in accelerated development and utilization of biotechnologies. Predictive Models and High Performance Computing as Tools to Accelerate the Scaling-Up of New Bio-Based Fuels Workshop
On June 9–11, 2020, BETO hosted the Predictive Models and High Performance Computing as Tools to Accelerate the Scaling-Up of New Bio-Based Fuels Workshop. The virtual workshop was designed to determine if predictive models and high performance computing can be utilized to:
- Accelerate scaling-up of biotechnologies
- Reduce uncertainty in biotechnologies
- Optimize operations of equipment and processes.
The main goal of the workshop was to determine if effective utilization of mathematical models and artificial intelligence with machine learning in conjunction with highly instrumented bench-, pilot-, and demonstration-scaled facilities can be used to validate and improve system and subsystem models. Advancing the Bioeconomy: From Waste to Conversion-Ready Feedstocks Workshop
On February 19–20, 2020, BETO hosted a workshop in Arlington, VA. In recent years, BETO has expanded its portfolio beyond traditional biomass feedstocks to include using waste resources, such as municipal solid waste (MSW), biosolids from municipal wastewater, and industrial waste gases. To date, the majority of funding has focused on reducing the cost and improving the performance of technologies to convert these wastes into fuels, products, and power.
In support of this effort, BETO’s Feedstock Supply and Logistics subprogram is investigating research and development opportunities to lower the delivered cost and improve the quality of MSW for these conversion strategies. As a result, BETO conducted a workshop to understand the current state and potential trajectories of technologies to support MSW as a feedstock for producing fuels, value-added products, and power. Plastics for a Circular Economy Workshop
On December 11–12, 2019 BETO hosted a workshop to discuss technology solutions for addressing plastic waste. The workshop focused on potential solutions including designing new plastics and developing new strategies for recycling and degradation and included discussions on end-of-life options for existing and next-generation plastics in the context of current and novel recycling strategies. Bio-Restore Workshop
On September 25–26, 2019, BETO hosted a workshop to identify data and research and development needs to enable the use of dedicated energy crops and algae for restoring water quality and enhancing soil health, while creating a new feedstock supply for the bioeconomy. Participants discussed the current state of technologies relevant to both terrestrial and algal biomass, as well as the potential for these technologies to reverse environmental degradation and provide important ecosystem services. Leveraging First Generation Bioethanol Production Workshop
On September 25–26, 2019, BETO hosted a workshop to discuss research and development related to the integration of advanced process technologies into first generation (1G) ethanol production facilities to co-produce cellulosic fuels, cellulosic sugars, and chemicals from corn fiber, and to convert or activate gaseous carbon dioxide. BETO was particularly interested in information on the development and verification of innovative process technologies and analytical methods for cost-competitive production of cellulosic biofuels and bio-products from non-starch feedstocks at 1G plants. On June 13, BETO hosted the Advanced Algal Systems Listening Session in Seattle, Washington. BETO sought feedback from experts in algal biology, cultivation, and conversion on how to address near-term research and development barriers and opportunities for cost-competitive algal biofuels and bioproducts. The agenda focused on opportunities and challenges in integrating algal productivity and biomass yield improvements in scalable algae cultivation systems to achieve high yields. On December 12-13, 2017, BETO hosted the Advanced Development and Optimization (ADO) Workshop in Golden, Colorado. BETO’s mission is focused on earlier development-cycle opportunities. Workshop on Moving beyond Drop-In Replacements: Performance Advantaged Biobased Chemicals
On June 1, 2017, BETO sponsored a workshop to seek stakeholder feedback on research and development for novel biobased compounds. The discussion was restricted to polymers, including biopolymers and polymers from novel monomers; small molecules like plasticizers, solvents, surfactants, and preservatives; and other building block chemicals. Algae Cultivation for Carbon Capture and Utilization Workshop
BETO hosted the Algae Cultivation for Carbon Capture and Utilization Workshop on May 23-24, 2017, in Orlando, Florida. The event gathered stakeholder input through facilitated discussions focused on innovative technologies and business strategies for growing algae on waste carbon dioxide (CO2) resources. Participant input will help inform DOE strategies for leveraging these technologies to realize affordable, scalable, and renewable production biofuels and bioproducts made from algae. Co-Optima Stakeholder Listening Day
On Jan. 19-20, 2017, BETO, the Vehicle Technologies Office, and the National Laboratory Co-Optima Team will host a stakeholder listening day for the Co-Optimization of Fuels & Engines (Co-Optima) initiative. The Co-Optima Stakeholder Listening Day will provide technical status updates to stakeholders and request targeted feedback on specific technical deliverables that will inform research and development priorities. Attendees will contribute input on the draft multi-year strategic plan, as well as the challenges and opportunities related to co-optimization of fuels and engines. Biorefinery Optimization Workshop
BETO hosted the Biorefinery Optimization Workshop on October 5-6, 2016 in Chicago, Illinois. The workshop helped to advance understanding of the current capabilities, barriers, and opportunities for integrated biorefineries working to produce biofuels, biochemicals, and bioproducts. Breakout sessions discussed the following topics: key technical and economic challenges facing feedstocks and solids handling processes; efforts in process intensification, scale-up, and CapEx/OpEx reduction; and product and waste stream monetization. Alternative Aviation Fuel Workshop
BETO hosted the Alternative Aviation Fuel Workshop on September 14-15, 2016, in Macon, Georgia, to advance the understanding of current technical barriers for increasing the competitiveness of aviation biofuels. The aviation industry faces significant challenges to maintain growth. Alternative energy systems such as batteries, fuel cells, and natural gas are options for on-road, off-road, and marine engine applications, but these alternative fuels are not yet practical for aviation. Sharpening Our Tools: Algal Biology Toolbox Workshop
BETO hosted the Algal Biology Toolbox Workshop on May 24-25, 2016, in San Diego, California. Because biological productivity is a key driver for the economic viability of algae-based biofuels, improving on the performance of native strains is a critical element of the research efforts funded by BETO’s Advanced Algal Systems Program. Attendees reviewed the tools and resources available to grow, monitor, valorize, and genetically enhance algae for biofuel production and will help inform a strategy for leveraging these tools to realize a future where algae-based biofuels and bioproducts contribute significantly to the U.S. bioeconomy. Agile Biomanufacturing Industry Listening Workshop
A consortium of nine national laboratories held the Agile Biomanufacturing Industry Listening Workshop on March 15, 2016 in Berkeley, California, to increase understanding of industry needs around synthetic biology.
DOE national laboratories have developed deep and unique capabilities to build powerful infrastructure and scientific engineering activities. This consortium seeks to develop an agile biomanufacturing platform that uses synthetic biology tools to rapidly engineer industrially relevant organisms for fuel and chemical production. This platform would incorporate state-of-the-art software used in combination with high-throughput laboratory equipment, accelerating the development of advanced biofuels, as well as renewable chemicals and materials. The platform will enable companies, national laboratories, and universities to develop biological processes efficiently and with reduced risk, and to create bio-derived products with better performance than their petroleum-derived predecessors. Co-Optima Stakeholder Listening Day
BETO and the Vehicle Technologies Office (VTO) co-hosted a stakeholder Listening Day on June 16-17, 2015, in Golden, Colorado, to help shape a major new Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Transportation initiative: Co-Optimization of Fuels and Engines (Co-Optima). In this multi-year initiative, a team of national laboratories will, with guidance from industry and other important stakeholders, work to accelerate the concurrent development of advanced fuels and engines that are economically viable, and commercially scalable. As envisioned, Co-Optima is poised to set the stage for a rapid transition to advanced fuels and propulsion systems for every vehicle on the road. To help ensure the success of this ambitious initiative, BETO and VTO designed the Listening Day to obtain guidance from diverse stakeholders. The event provided participants an opportunity to influence the key components of Co-Optima; identify potential barriers to its success; and gain an early stake in Co-Optima goals, timelines, and technical paths relevant to their areas of interest. Open discussion and use of web-based tools allowed attendees to contribute comprehensive feedback on draft project plans—and provide critical information to DOE and the national labs. Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Sequestration Workshop
DOE’s Office of Fossil Energy and BETO co-hosted the Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Sequestration (BECCS) Workshop on Monday, May 18, 2015, in Washington, D.C. The workshop brought together experts in bioenergy, power generation, and transmission and distribution infrastructure from industry, academia, nonprofits, government, and national laboratories to discuss low-carbon and carbon-negative power systems and the use of biomass in power generation to achieve lower emissions. Workshop on Energy-Positive Water Resource Recovery
The National Science Foundation, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and DOE jointly hosted the Workshop on Energy-Positive Water Resource Recovery on April 28-29, 2015, in Arlington, Virginia, to gain insights and identify specific technical and nontechnical barriers that are hindering development and deployment of the water resource recovery facilities of the future. Topics included the role of the federal government, nontechnical considerations like policy and financing, and systems perspective. The Hydrogen, Hydrocarbons, and Bioproduct Precursors from Wastewaters Workshop was held March 18-19, 2015, hosted by the DOE's National Renewable Energy Laboratory's Washington D.C. offices. Sponsored by the Bioenergy and Fuel Cell Technologies Offices, the workshop gathered 30 experts from academia, government, and industry to share information and identify the current status and potential research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) possibilities for production of hydrogen and higher hydrocarbons (containing four or more carbon molecules) from wastewaters using biological, biochemical, and other techniques. Advanced Supply System Validation Workshop
BETO held the Advanced Supply System Validation Workshop on February 3-4, 2015, in Golden, Colorado. The purpose of the workshop was to bring together a diverse group of stakeholders to examine, discuss, and validate analysis assumptions used to move beyond current feedstock supply systems designed to support the agriculture and forestry industries. Demonstration and Deployment Strategy Workshop
The Demonstration and Deployment Strategy Workshop was held on March 12-13, 2014, at Argonne National Laboratory's Advanced Photon Source conference center outside of Chicago, Illinois. This workshop discussed, reassessed, and prioritized demonstration and deployment efforts needed for the production of affordable, scalable, and sustainable drop-in hydrocarbons. Incorporating Bioenergy in Landscape Design Workshop
BETO hosted two workshops on Incorporating Bioenergy into Landscape Designs with Oak Ridge and Argonne National Laboratories. The first workshop focused on forestry landscapes and was held in New Bern, North Carolina, from March 4-6, 2014. The second workshop focused on agricultural landscapes and was held in Argonne, Illinois, from June 24-26, 2014. Landscape design offers a promising means for increasing bioenergy production while maintaining or enhancing other ecosystem services. The workshops convened multidisciplinary experts to discuss how landscape design can assist in the deployment and assessment of bioenergy and how to move forward in a manner that best serves industry, decision makers, and producers, while achieving environmental goals. Natural Gas-Biomass to Liquids Workshop
BETO, in coordination with the Office of Fossil Energy and the National Energy Technology Laboratory, hosted a workshop on September 3, 2013, on Natural Gas-Biomass to Liquids (GBTL) research needs and technology options. Biomass conversion processes, particularly thermochemical routes to hydrocarbons, already utilize natural gas for process heat and for hydrotreating (to remove excess oxygen) and hydrocracking (to create hydrocarbons of the appropriate chain length to meet the specifications for jet, gasoline, and diesel fuels). The recent development of the increased availability and low cost of natural gas has created opportunities to consider the use of natural gas as a feedstock for conversion into liquid hydrocarbons.
DOE is interested in understanding how the use of natural gas and biomass may be optimized and integrated into a conversion process to liquid fuels. The objective of this workshop was to obtain input from industry, academia, research establishments, and other experts on whether there is a role for DOE to conduct research and development and develop new process technologies. As a preliminary effort, the workshop explored the production of liquid transportation fuels from natural gas and biomass feedstocks, concentrating on two main tracks: technical barriers, and emissions and resource potential.

The Third Annual Municipal Solid Waste to Biofuels and Bio-Products Summit was held in Orlando, Florida, on February 20-21, 2013. The event featured discussion of technology commercialization, project economics, development, and operations, as well as financial funding strategies. Commercial Aviation Alternative Fuels Initiative's Alternative Fuels Cost Workshop
On November 27, 2012, the Commercial Aviation Alternative Fuels Initiative (CAAFI), in conjunction with the Federal Aviation Administration and DOE, hosted a stakeholder workshop to benchmark the cost of producing bio-based jet-fuel processes. The event was held in advance of the 2012 CAAFI Research and Development Team Workshop on November 28-29. A white paper will be published on the CAAFI workshop, featuring the technologies and approaches for producing biofuels that are of interest to the aviation sector.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology Biofuels Standards Conference
The National Institute of Standards and Technology hosted the Biofuels Standards Conference in Gaithersburg, Maryland, November 13-15, 2012. The conference was organized in conjunction with the Brazilian National Institute of Metrology, Quality, and Technology and the European Commission's Directorate General – Energy to provide a forum for discussion on the following: documentary and measurement standards and technologies for biofuels; state-of-the-art biofuels production and trade; applications in surface transportation and aviation; and future trends that may require new biofuels standards. Experts from industry, academia, and government, as well as the U.S. national laboratories, attended the event. The presentation given by BETO is posted below:

Global Bioenergy Partnership Capacity-Building Workshop on Biomass Resource Assessment
The Global Bioenergy Partnership Economic Commission of West African State Capacity Building Workshop on Biomass Resource Assessment was held November 13-14, 2012, in Rome, Italy. The event's goal was to educate and train members from Western Africa countries to complete a biomass assessment. BETO participated by sharing the methodology used in the biomass assessment of the U.S. Billion-Ton Update and participating in the discussion of strategies for biomass assessments in Western Africa. Aviation Biofuels Development Conference
The Aviation Biofuels Development Conference was held in Washington, D.C., on October 2, 2012. The conference focused on industry challenges faced in the alternative aviation fuel market. BETO participated by providing a presentation on the economics of alternative aviation fuels. More than 200 leaders and pioneers from the industry, as well as executives from aviation, aerospace, biofuels, and regulatory arenas, attended the event. Algae Biomass Summit
From September 24-27, 2012, the Algae Biomass Organization hosted its sixth annual Algae Biomass Summit, the largest conference of algal biomass stakeholders in the world. The summit was attended by more than 800 industry leaders, government representatives, and university and laboratory researchers—representing 25 different countries. Plenary and breakout sessions concentrated on four key topic areas: biology; commercialization; finance and policy; and engineering and analysis. The goal of the sessions was to identify and resolve barriers to competitive algae biomass production. The presentation given by BETO is posted below:

Advanced Biofuels Industry Roundtable
On May 18, 2012, the United States Department of Navy, in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, DOE, and the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Aviation Administration, hosted an Industry Roundtable with the full complement of participants in the biofuels supply chain. The purpose of the roundtable meeting was for the federal government to present further details on the partnership among the U.S. Department of Navy, DOE, and U.S. Department of Agriculture to construct or retrofit multiple commercial-scale advanced biorefineries.

Technical Information Exchange on Pyrolysis Oil Workshop
On May 9-10, 2012, BETO conducted a Technical Information Exchange Workshop to solicit inputs on the opportunities and challenges associated with the development and deployment of biomass derived home heating oil products for U.S. markets. The workshop featured presentations by technical experts from industry, academia, national laboratories, and government, and it facilitated discussions of technical and economic challenges, as well as research, development, and demonstration priorities. The workshop generated a wealth of information and ideas, and the program will use the workshop results to inform its strategic planning and prioritizing of future research and development on pyrolysis oil.
Approximately 8 million households in the United States heat with oil; 6.2 million (about 78%) are located in the Northeast. Given this high reliance on fuel oil for residential heating, an affordable alternative would be particularly beneficial to this region. Pyrolysis oil derived from domestic biomass has been identified as one of the most promising alternatives for this market. However, we must overcome significant challenges to reliably produce an ample supply of pyrolysis oil that has the characteristics required for it to be a viable substitute for traditional heating oil.
