Accelerating Advanced Reactor Development with LANL’s Deimos Testbed
Date: December 10, 2026
Time: 2:00 PM ET / 11 AM PT
Join us for a National Lab Discovery Series webinar showcasing Deimos, a reconfigurable experimental testbed from Los Alamos National Laboratory that helps advanced reactor developers generate experimental data earlier in the development process.
Deimos allows developers to test partial reactor core configurations in a HALEU/TRISO-relevant neutron environment without building a full reactor for each test. Its established safety envelope and reconfigurable design support rapid experimentation, helping developers validate models, refine designs, and reduce uncertainty on the path toward licensing and deployment.
Why Attend?
- Learn how Deimos enables partial-core testing in a HALEU/TRISO-relevant neutron environment
- Explore how its reconfigurable design supports testing of fuels, materials, and reactor components
- Understand how experimental data from Deimos can support model validation, design decisions, and licensing
- Discover opportunities to collaborate with Los Alamos on advanced reactor testing
Who Should Join?
- Advanced nuclear reactor developers
- Nuclear fuel developers and suppliers
- Engineering, procurement and construction organizations and reactor integrators
- Technical and commercialization professionals supporting advanced reactor development and deployment
About the Technology
Deimos is a reconfigurable critical experiment testbed operated at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center at the Nevada National Security Site. Its design separates the testbed into two regions: a fixed outer region containing HALEU TRISO fuel that establishes the neutron environment and safety basis, and a changeable inner region that allows developers to test their own fuel forms, moderators, structural components, and reactor-shutdown materials. Partial reactor core configurations can be assembled and brought to criticality within Deimos, allowing researchers to measure how the design performs under relevant reactor physics conditions. The resulting data can be used to validate models and inform design decisions.
Deimos is available now for collaborative testing. Los Alamos works with industry partners to define test configurations and conduct experiments that support reactor development and licensing.
Featured Speaker: Theresa Cutler
Theresa Cutler is the Acting Nuclear Energy NCERC Program Director in the Nuclear Engineering and Nonproliferation Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), where she has worked for over a decade. Her expertise lies in critical experiments and nuclear criticality safety, primarily at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC) in Nevada, the only facility of its kind in the Western world. As Crew Chief and Principal Investigator for various critical assemblies, she also leads the DOE/NRC Criticality Safety for HALEU project. She is a recognized expert, known for leading successful experiments and expanding collaborations in this field with Nuclear Energy. She is also an active member of several ANS Standards Committees focused on nuclear criticality safety.
Other Speakers: Michael Erickson
Mike is a Partnership Development Manager within the Richard P. Feynman Center for Innovation at Los Alamos National Laboratory, with 20 years of experience in technology transfer. He develops strategic technical collaborations with industry to advance the Laboratory’s national security mission. His work connects Laboratory expertise and intellectual property with industry capabilities through collaborative research, licensing, and commercialization, aligning partnership opportunities with mission needs.
