For decades, the Energy Department’s 17 National Laboratories have served as leading institutions for scientific innovation, tackling the world’s biggest scientific challenges. Using world-class facilities, researchers address complex questions about the performance and cost of industrial decarbonization technologies, translating basic science to innovation.
IEDO awards funding to National Labs through funding opportunity announcements, multi-year funding programs specially designed for national labs (such as lab calls), and collaborative research projects with industry stakeholders and other offices and initiatives in the U.S. Department of Energy. All projects must meet agreed-upon objectives, deliver on milestones, and yield results relevant to the office’s current research priorities, reflected in its Mission & Vision.
Lab Calls
IEDO lab calls are funding made available to national labs to leverage their world-class facilities and expertise to pursue industrial energy R&D. Funding issued under lab calls supports projects across IEDO's three research areas: Energy- and Emissions-Intensive Industries (EEII), Cross-Sector Technologies (CST), and Technical Assistance and Workforce Development (TA&WD).

Technology Commercialization Fund (TCF)
The TCF is a funding opportunity designed to help commercialize energy technologies developed at DOE national laboratories. The technology must be matured to a point where a business will enter either a (preferred) Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) or some other sufficiently described specific agreement type (e.g., licensing the technology). Although only National Labs can respond to this lab call, these facilities can subcontract with non-DOE partners.
The DOE Office of Technology Transitions administers TCF, which is part of a set of initiatives to foster stronger partnerships among DOE facilities, private companies, and other entities that bring energy technologies to the marketplace.
