The DOE Office of Science sponsors basic research at over 300 institutions across the country, including universities, national laboratories, nonprofits, and private sector institutions.  Funding is awarded on a competitive basis using peer review.  Research efforts range from single-investigator grants to large team-based projects. 

We administer research through eight program offices, spanning a broad range of disciplines: Accelerator R&D and ProductionAdvanced Scientific Computing Research, Basic Energy Sciences, Biological and Environmental Research, Fusion Energy Sciences, High Energy Physics, Isotope R&D and Production, and Nuclear Physics.

The DOE Office of Science Early Career Research Program provides annual funding opportunities for outstanding early career scientists in the disciplines supported by the DOE Office of Science.

In addition, our Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists sponsors student internships and other education and training programs at DOE’s 17 national laboratories.
