ADR Office Workshops and Custom Training

The ADR Office is proud to provide free custom skills-based trainings to all aspects of the DOE enterprise, including contractors, field offices, national labs, NNSA employees, and everyone affiliated with the DOE. All of the ADR Office’s trainings are centered around the three Core Competencies of effective communication, fostering a conflict-healthy culture, and promoting teamwork. The ADR Office includes many of the sub-competency skills listed below in each of its workshops.

Learning Opportunities 

ADR Lunchtime Series 

Once every quarter, the ADR Office brings in experts and thought leaders from outside the DOE to provide a presentation focusing on ADR-related topics and current issues affecting the conflict-healthy workplace. You can view videos of some prior Lunchtime Series speakers here.  

ADR Open Enrollment Workshops 

Twice a month the ADR Office brings a 1.5 hour interactive, skills-based virtual workshop to everybody within the DOE enterprise. Topics rotate quarterly, and prior workshops include those listed below.  

ADR Office’s Monthly Supervisor Forum 

Once a month, supervisors across the DOE complex (federal and contractor alike) join virtually to build networks, discuss topics related to creating a conflict-healthy culture, and be thought partners with each other on issues and challenges they may be facing. 

ADR Review Newsletter 

Four times annually, the ADR Office publishes its ADR Review Newsletter, which features updates on upcoming events, a note from the ADR Director, and an article on a pertinent topic.  

 

Available Workshops

Effective Feedback Strategies for a Conflict-Healthy Workplace  

Feedback involves more than just performance evaluations or formal meetings between colleagues. Learn about the “situation, behavior, impact” model of feedback and practice how to make effective feedback part of a conflict-resilient workplace.

Bystander/Upstander Intervention  

Behaviors in the workplace that are harassing, abusive, or disrespectful can spur unproductivity and disengagement. In this workshop, we discuss the “Five Ds” of intervention, how and when you can intervene, and practice intervention in different scenarios.

The 5 Pillars of an Engaged Workplace 

This workshop is geared towards supervisors and managers passionate about promoting healthy workplace cultures. We discuss the five practical things you can do to make your team more engaged and fulfilled, and we’ll practice skills in building trust within a team.

Difficult Conversations: A Scenario-Based Approach 

In this heavily interactive workshop, we don’t just talk about hard conversations, we practice having them. We break out into groups to run through scenarios and practice approaches in handling heightened emotions and uncomfortable topics.

In One Ear: Effective Listening for Better Results 

In this workshop, we sharpen our listening skills by exploring what the “three levels of listening” are, why “active” listening is not enough, what physiological barriers get in the way of good listening, and the simple approach that can ensure your coworkers feel heard.

Conflict Styles in the Workplace 

In this workshop, we practice identifying the five conflict “styles” people frequently adopt when in conflict, how different people may approach conflict differently, and consider how we can use the conflict style framework to manage conflict more effectively.

As Far As You Can Throw: Building Trust for Stronger Teams 

Trust is choosing to risk making yourself vulnerable to another person. In this workshop, we discuss the four distinctions of trust, and practice what it takes to build (and re-build) trust.

How We Did It: Leveraging Servant Leadership for a More Engaged Workforce

For FY 2023, the Office of Hearings and Appeals (in which the ADR Office is housed), achieved 100% participation in FEVS and the highest Employee Engagement Index in the entirety of the DOE. We believe servant leadership has played a key role in our office's success.  In this 90-minute interactive workshop geared toward supervisors (but not restricted to them), we’ll outline some practical tips on how to harness the power of servant leadership to increase employee engagement, retention, and productivity.

Within Bounds:  Setting and Keeping Boundaries

We all need them and they’re crucial to conflict-healthy workplaces, but we often struggle with establishing and enforcing appropriate boundaries in our workplace and personal lives.  This 90-minute workshop is designed to help us understand how to discuss boundaries and empower yourself and others to enforce them.

I Second That Emotion:  Growing Your Emotional Intelligence

We were surprised to find that in our last Needs Assessment, “Emotional Intelligence” was the number one requested competency. So, by popular demand (and with many apologies to Smokey Robinson and the Miracles), we’re bringing you this new workshop. But is Emotional Intelligence really a skill that can be practiced and improved? You bet it is! In this 90-minute interactive workshop, we’ll discuss the four elements that make up Emotional Intelligence, do some exercises flexing those EQ muscles, and talk about proven techniques for improving this critical skill!
