September 6, 2023The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Advanced Manufacturing Materials and Technology Office (AMMTO) convened the second CABLE workshop on July 20–21, 2022. The event assembled a cadre of experts, including engineers and AOHC manufacturers. The need for rapid deployment of Advanced Overhead Conductors (AOHC) emerged as a priority to meet Biden's 2035 zero-carbon grid target. As a result, the CABLE prize categories were expanded, aiming to influence upcoming funding opportunities.
A separate Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) focused on thermal conductivity was highly advocated, especially for specialized applications like microelectronics and thermoelectrics. The commercial prospects of REBCO tape superconductors, particularly for compact fusion reactors, were also discussed, signifying their nearing market readiness.
Emphasis was placed on the vital role of theory, modeling, and lab-based research in the development of conductor technologies. These expert insights are set to guide research and funding decisions for fiscal year 2024 and beyond.
