The Build Challenge (formerly called the Solar Decathlon) started on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. in 2002. Since then, the Build Challenge was held biennially in 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2020 and 2023.
Participants in the 2020 and 2023 Build Challenges designed and built complete, functional houses in their communities to demonstrate creative solutions for real-world issues in the building industry at a local exhibition. Prior to the 2020 event, teams designed and built homes that were transported to a central location for competition.
