In October 2009, 20 teams from colleges and universities in the United States, Canada, Germany, and Spain competed to design, build, and operate the most attractive and energy-efficient house in the 2009 Build Challenge on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. After a close and fun-filled competition, Team Germany once again was named overall winner. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign placed second, and Team California placed third.
For the 2009 event, teams were awarded $100,000 over two years to support the construction of the homes.
