Are You Ready to Help Advance Reservoir Thermal Energy Storage Technologies?
Let’s find out with a quick guide to navigate Topic Area 2 of the Combined Wellbore Construction High Temperature Tools and Reservoir Thermal Energy Storage (RTES) Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA)!
This is a combined FOA with two Topic Areas. In Topic Area 2, the FOA seeks a demonstration project for low-temperature (<130◦ C) reservoir thermal energy storage (RTES) technology with applications to industrial processes. The objective is to support energy-intensive industrial heating processes and spur RTES technology towards being a long-term, reliable technology for U.S. industry and manufacturing.
This guide provides tips for the key items you’ll need—but be sure to read the FOA in its entirety, too! Note that if a section identified in the tips below does not specify a topic area, you can assume that the requirements in that section apply to both topic areas. - Determine if the Topic Area 2 opportunity is a good fit for you. If you have ideas or innovations for a subsurface energy storage system that can support industrial heat demands, chances are the answer is yes!
- Sections I.A.i.2, I.A.ii.2, and I.B.2 of the FOA provide details that can help you decide if your ideas, tools, and technologies are a fit for Topic Area 2
- Sections II.A.i, III.B.2, and III.B.i–vi of the FOA provide information on the available funding and the cost share your company or organization would need to provide to participate.
- Sections I.A.i.2, I.A.ii.2, and I.B.2 of the FOA provide details that can help you decide if your ideas, tools, and technologies are a fit for Topic Area 2
- Make sure you’re eligible by reviewing the eligibility requirements in Section III of the FOA.
- Collate your ideas and determine how you want to discuss a solution that will meet the FOA needs and objectives. Check out details on the technology space and goals in Section I.A.ii.2 of the FOA to ensure that your demonstration project idea aligns with what is being funded.
- If you want to partner with other organizations on your project and need assistance doing so, check out the Teaming Partners List (for Topic Area 2 only). Learn more in Section I.A.iii.
- Write your application! Read the Eligibility Information in Section III and consider the Technical Review Criteria in Section V.A.i.2 and Program Policy Factors in Section V.C.i in developing your project plan and application materials. Note that the Program Policy Factors include several applicable to both FOA Topic Areas, plus two specific to Topic Area 2 only.
- Edit and review your application to ensure you have covered everything that’s needed and that you meet the requirements in the Application and Submission Information in Section IV.
- Submit your application in EERE eXCHANGE by 5:00 p.m. ET on April 1, 2024, using the instructions in the Application and Submission Information in Section IV. Potential applicants will be required to have a Login.gov account to access EERE eXCHANGE. You can find more information in Section VI.B.i, Registration Requirements in the FOA.
