Microgrids R&D Technology Area: Resilience Modeling & Tools

The resilience modeling & tools microgrids R&D (MGRD) technology area includes developing resilience approaches, models, and tools to relevant stakeholders to refine and accelerate their adoption.

Activities

Risk-controlled Expansion Planning with Distributed Resources (REPAIR)

The REPAIR modeling tool informs utilities’ investment decisions and considers risk management, addressing both routine reliability events and high-impact, low-probability resilience events. REPAIR helps utilities plan distribution systems and value distributed energy resources in resilience scenarios. Learn more about the REPAIR tool:

Resilience Node Cluster Analysis Tool (ReNCAT)

Sandia’s ReNCAT software application analyzes geographical areas for optimal microgrid placement, ensuring critical services remain available during grid outages. The tool uses distribution system topology, critical infrastructure locations, and threats to prioritize the areas that can maximize access to critical services while benefitting the greatest number of impacted people.

Resilience Modeling

Models development supports evaluating the resilient operation of microgrids and electrical distribution systems evaluate microgrid resilience under abnormal operating conditions, such as a natural disaster. Understanding and implementing findings from resilience modeling enhances the operation of existing and future microgrids and distribution systems to meet the demand of critical loads.
