The Hydrocarbons and Geothermal Energy Office’s (HGEO’s) Office of Strategic Resources leads efforts to ensure the security, stability, and strategic value of the Nation’s oil and gas exports and the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. The Office of Strategic Resources is responsible for administering the U.S. Department of Energy’s regulatory responsibilities for natural gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports and exports under the Natural Gas Act. The Office oversees the nation’s strategic and emergency fuel reserves, including the Naval Petroleum Reserve, the Northeast Home Heating Oil Reserve, and the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Additionally, the Office manages the Secretary of Energy’s National Petroleum Council federal advisory committee.
The Office of Strategic Resources supports the following HGEO goals:
- Ensure the security, stability, and strategic value of the Nation’s oil and gas exports and the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
- Fill the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to its maximum capacity and maintain drawdown readiness.
The Office of Strategic Resources includes two sub-program offices 1) the Office of Global Energy Security and 2) the Office of Petroleum Reserves.
