The Hydrocarbons and Geothermal Energy Office (HGEO)’s Office of Global Energy Security supports HGEO’s goal to ensure the security, stability, and strategic value of the Nation’s oil and gas exports. The Office provides strategic direction and leadership for Natural Gas Import and Export Regulation, and related analysis and initiatives. Specifically, the Office aims to:
- Strengthen national resilience by proactively managing critical hydrocarbon resources, mitigating vulnerabilities in global supply chains, and advancing policies that promote reliable, affordable, and secure energy domestically and abroad.
- Develop and execute strategies that balance domestic energy needs, global demand, and long-term economic and national security.
- Implement policies and solutions for securing supply for the U.S. and our allies.
The Office of Global Energy Security includes three divisions, 1) Market and Economic Analysis 2) Regulation, and 3) Strategic Initiatives.
Divisions
Market and Economic Analysis
The Division of Market and Economic Analysis provides the analysis and information necessary to support the Department’s work in natural gas, liquefied natural gas (LNG), and petroleum markets and exports. The Division also works with interagency and international partners on reporting standards for hydrocarbons and supports analytical and engagement efforts related to global oil and gas trade issues.
Regulation
The Division of Regulation retains authority over the trade of natural gas as a commodity under Section 3 of the Natural Gas Act. For more information visit, https://www.energy.gov/hgeo/regulation
Strategic Initiatives
The Division of Strategic Initiatives works with international stakeholders on the import and export of oil and natural gas, leads the management of the This was an empty link: Secretary of Energy’s Secretary of Energy’s National Petroleum Council, and provides oversight for the Propane Education and Research Council (PERC) and National Oilheat Research Alliance (NORA).
