The Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management’s Office of Resource Sustainability administers the Department’s technology development and knowledge generation efforts to advance the development, production, and use of the Nation’s abundant oil and natural gas resources and increase the production and processing of critical minerals and materials in the United States. These goals will be accomplished through policy, research, innovation, outreach, and stewardship.
The Office Resource Sustainability has two major offices:
The Office of Research and Development advances technologies and solutions associated with fossil energy development, use, transportation, and storage. This includes identifying new approaches for the production, transportation, and storage of oil and natural gas; developing advanced technologies for increasing resource recovery, produced water reuse and mineral extraction, natural gas infrastructure, the conversion of methane to hydrogen and other products, and the generation of carbon products from coal. The office is also stimulating innovative advances that expand the supply of critical minerals from both traditional and unconventional or secondary feedstocks, improving the economic performance of critical minerals recovery, processing, use, and disposal while reducing the environmental impacts.
The Office of Regulation, Analysis, and Engagement regulates the import and export of natural gas, conducts analysis of fossil fuel and critical mineral markets, assesses legislative, policy and regulatory proposals, and leads outreach for domestic and international engagements.
