The Office of Resource Sustainability fosters the research, development, and innovation needed to expand oil, gas, coal, and critical minerals production and use throughout the United States. The office administers DOE’s technology development to advance the production and use of the nation’s abundant oil and natural gas resources and to increase the production and processing of critical minerals and materials in the United States. The office also authorizes exports of liquefied natural gas.
Priority areas include:
- Mineral production and processing technologies program focuses on the production and processing of critical minerals and on developing an economically sustainable and secure domestic supply chain. The program also conducts technology innovation on new advanced mining technologies and solutions.
- Liquefied natural gas authorizations carry out DOE’s regulatory responsibilities over the import and export of liquefied natural gas under Section 3 of the Natural Gas Act.
- Advanced production technologies program focuses on increasing oil and natural gas exploration and production, water management, and offshore efficiency, safety, and spill prevention, as well as carbon dioxide enhanced oil recovery.
- Natural gas infrastructure program focuses on improving oil and natural gas pipeline reliability, safety, and security, as well as underground storage capabilities. The program also conducts research and development on natural gas to hydrogen, including evaluating the natural gas infrastructure for hydrogen transport and storage.
