Background Information

On December 1, 2022, the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM) released a request for information (RFI) on various aspects of carbon storage sites, including technology development through field tests.

DOE is seeking input on the best approaches and options for developing field laboratories, whether at Carbon Storage Assurance Facility Enterprise (CarbonSAFE) initiative project sites or other sites, to catalyze the rapid development and field testing of technologies that would support a safe and affordable CCS industry. If funded, Carbon Storage Technology Operations & Research (CarbonSTORE) would provide funding to operators of facilities and support to researchers to help accelerate the development of enabling technologies needed to underpin the gigaton-scale infrastructure required to meet national goals for net zero CO2 emissions by establishing multiple CarbonSTORE facilities serving as long-term carbon storage field laboratories.

This is a request for information only and DOE is not accepting application at this time. DOE may use information collected from this RFI for internal planning and decision-making purposes.

Areas of Interest

DOE seeks input from CCS developers/operators, researchers, communities, and others to assist in the development and deployment of the CarbonSTORE concept.
