Duties/Description

The Point Source Carbon Capture division provides Headquarters (HQ) oversight, management, and direction of the Department of Energy's (DOE) RD&D activities for carbon capture on point sources in both the power and industrial sectors, such as natural gas plants, hydrogen facilities and cement plants. This division also supports crosscutting approaches, such as fuel switching, e.g., coal to natural gas or biomass waste coupled to carbon capture.  Specific efforts focus on pre-combustion, post-combustion, and oxy-combustion capture systems, including chemical looping.

The incumbent will serve as the Point Source Carbon Capture RD&D Program Manager, and will:

  • Serve as the Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM) HQ Program Manager for Point Source Carbon Capture RD&D.
  • Direct FECM efforts in ongoing and new studies to identify trends and to forecast directions in carbon capture for the power and industrial sectors, including markets, externalities, and competing technologies for decarbonization.
  • Utilize a strong technical expertise while assessing the potential of pioneering research to contribute towards meeting programmatic goals and DOE FECM priorities.
  • Plan and execute the Point Source Carbon Capture RD&D Program and keep abreast of the latest developments and activities within and outside DOE.
  • Serve as a technical expert and core member of the FECM Point Source Carbon Capture Program and interact often with the National Energy Technology Laboratory Carbon Capture Technology Manager.

Candidates should demonstrate the following:

  • Skill in oral and written communication to communicate with a variety of departmental organizations, regulatory agencies, and stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of program management tools, including budgeting and planning.
  • Expertise in the following areas:  gas-gas separations (specifically, carbon dioxide (CO2) from nitrogen or CO2 from hydrogen); carbon capture materials including solvents, sorbents, and membranes; processes tailored to work with carbon capture materials; techno-economic analysis; and an understanding of life cycle analysis and the integration of carbon capture systems with other FECM programmatic elements including storage, utilization, and carbon dioxide removal.
