Sustainable purchasing of electronics helps reduce waste and conserve natural resources, lowering the impact of technology. A nonprofit has recognized five U.S. Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management sites for implementing programs to meet these goals.
The nonprofit Global Electronics Council recently announced the 2026 EPEAT Purchaser Awards. EPEAT is the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool used to help procurement specialists evaluate, compare and select sustainable electronics products to purchase. The awards focus on four primary categories: computers and displays, imaging equipment, servers and mobile phones.
Hanford and Savannah River were recognized in four categories, Oak Ridge and Portsmouth in three, and the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in two. Their combined cost savings totaled $418,589 on 21,513 products purchased in 2025. That’s an energy savings comparable to the annual electricity usage of nearly 800 U.S. households.
Their efforts to prioritize sustainable purchasing practices demonstrates that thoughtful procurement decisions deliver lasting value, saving taxpayer dollars and protecting communities and the environment.
