This summer, DOE is proud to host over 1,450 interns from a variety of educational backgrounds.
Since 2002, the Office of Science Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS) has sponsored more than 1,900 Community College Internships (CCI) and 15,800 Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI).

Dresean Abeyta
Office of Indian Energy College Student Internship
University of New Mexico, Junior in Chemical Engineering - Navajo Nation
Dresean will focus his research on his home community: Current Solar Opportunities Education for Alamo - Navajo Community (not within the contiguous Navajo Nation)
Hunter Basile
Student Experience Internship Program
North Cross School, High School Student
Hunter Basile, an intern with the Office of Nuclear Energy, is set to graduate in the spring of 2025 with a STEM distinction from North Cross School in Roanoke, Virginia. He hopes to study math or engineering in college.
Mikayla Bia
Mentorship for Environmental Scholars (MES) Program
Dine College, Pre-Engineering Student
Mikayla has been placed at the Office of Legacy Management (LM)’s office in Grand Junction, Colorado. This is Mikayla’s second year as an MES intern with LM. Last year, she worked closely with scientists on the Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act (UMTRCA) Team and Uranium Mine Team with site activities such as inventories, environmental sampling, and in-field quality assurance. Mikayla enjoys working with her peers, her mentors, and other DOE employees.
Jasmine Engel
Mentorship for Environmental Scholars (MES) Program
Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, Second Year in Environmental Science
Jasmine has been placed at the Office of Legacy Management’s office in Grand Junction, Colorado where she is conducting a research project using vegetation to help manage nuclear waste disposal sites and will present her findings at the end of the summer. She is grateful and looking forward to this experience and getting to know all the people she will meet on the way.
Anne Marie Garner
Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program
Brigham Young University, Senior in Chemical Engineering
Anne Marie's MLEF project focuses on assessing the feasibility of a small, modular plasma gasification plant in remote Alaska, where she is responsible for using key factors such as design, cost analysis, and operational performance to determine its viability. In her leisure time, Anne Marie finds joy in traveling and delving into epic fantasy literature. She plans on continuing her career in energy development after graduation.

University of Washington, PhD in Chemistry - Lumbee Tribe
Alexis will focus her research on the possible end of life for PV - photovoltaic panels.
Alana Nii
University of Chicago, Undergraduate Student in Global Studies
Alana joined the Office of Nuclear Energy this summer as a DOE Scholar - Clean Energy Deployment and Innovation intern intern. Alana is an undergraduate student at the University of Chicago, majoring in Global Studies with a specialization in Political Economy and a minor in East Asian Languages and Civilizations. Outside of classes, she is a research director for her college’s Society for International Relations and co-artistic director for its freestyle dance crew. So far, her favorite part of working at DOE has been all the great people she’s been able to meet!
Sherry Sneezer
Office of Indian Energy College Student Internship
Rochester Institute of Technology PhD in Sustainability - Navajo Nation
Sherry's research will focus on a case study of the Picuris Pueblo, who have successfully implemented a strategic energy plan and have received solar hardware grants.
Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program
Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico, Senior in Chemical Engineering
Ana's MLEF project focuses on conducting a background study on mine tailings and exploring their composition, environmental impacts, and management practices, with a particular emphasis on recovering critical minerals essential to the U.S. economy and national security. Ana aspires to work in the nuclear industry as a researcher, focusing on pioneering advancements. She plans to continue her education in graduate school to further specialize in her field.

The Office of Environmental Management (EM) Minority Serving Institutions Partnership Program (MSIPP) provides students and graduates of Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) with hands-on education and experience by supporting collaborations between MSIs and DOE national laboratories.
