The age of AI will demand more scientific talent, not less.
AI does not eliminate the need for scientific expertise—it expands what scientists and engineers can accomplish, making them more productive. This demand for talent spans the innovation spectrum, from Ph.D.s in research laboratories and engineers in design and development to technicians in manufacturing facilities.
The Department of Energy (DOE) estimates that the nation will need a workforce of 100,000 American scientists and engineers over the next decade to lead the world in AI-powered science and innovation.
Genesis Mission Graduate Fellowship Program
The Genesis Mission Graduate Fellowship Program will prepare a new generation of scientists and engineers to push the frontiers of AI.
This accelerated, four-year doctoral pathway will equip domestic graduate students with cutting-edge, hands-on training with dual competencies in AI and their respective scientific disciplines, coupled with practical experience at National Laboratories, DOE User Facilities, and industry.
The fellowship program will strengthen the nation’s domestic science and engineering talent base and help ensure the workforce needed to realize the promise of the Genesis Mission.
Applications are open now through January 12, 2027. Learn more about the program, eligibility, and how to apply.
We are building extraordinary scientific capabilities. Now we need the people who can unlock their full potential.
Input from Today’s Workforce
Advancing AI for Science and Engineering Workforce Development and Genesis Mission Challenges
On Jan. 16, 2026, DOE posted a Request for Information (RFI) to solicit public and private sector input on strategies for meeting the technical challenges of the Genesis Mission and developing a skilled American workforce to advance AI in science and engineering. Responses to this RFI continue to inform DOE’s Genesis Mission workforce development and engagement strategy.
