AIKEN, S.C. – Edwin R. Deshong, III, assumed the role of manager for the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Savannah River Operations Office effective June 1.

The Department’s Office of Environmental Management (EM) named Deshong as the new manager this week. He succeeds Michael D. Budney, who will retire this year.

Deshong, who previously served as acting manager since February and deputy manager since Dec. 2022, brings to the position over 33 years of Departmental experience.

As the manager for the Savannah River Operations Office, Deshong will lead a highly-skilled workforce of federal and contractor personnel covering the 310-square mile Savannah River Site located in Aiken, S.C.

“I am honored to be chosen to lead the Savannah River Operations Office at this important time when SRS is achieving real progress, including accelerating the liquid waste mission and achieving significant milestones empowering our community.” Deshong said.

Deshong, a graduate of South Carolina State University and the University of Maryland, has served the Department in various leadership roles including chief engineer for the Savannah River Operations Office. He also served as the acting deputy field office manager, assistant manager for programs and senior facility representative for the National Nuclear Security Administration’s (NNSA) Savannah River Field Office, where he was responsible for integrating nuclear operations, weapons quality assurance and weapons stockpile commitments.

Most recently, Deshong served as deputy manager for the Savannah River Operations Office, where he was a key leader implementing the transition of primary authority for SRS from EM to NNSA.
