The U.S. Department of Energy's Portsmouth/Paducah Project Office (PPPO) manages the Department's Office of Environmental Management (EM) cleanup projects at the Portsmouth, Ohio and Paducah, Kentucky former Gaseous Diffusion Plant sites.  Our active projects encompass decontamination and decommissioning (D&D), environmental remediation, waste management, and depleted uranium hexafluoride (DUF6) conversion.  These efforts represent the nation’s commitment to address the environmental legacy of six decades of uranium enrichment for nuclear weapons and reactor fuel.

Portsmouth Site

An extensive EM cleanup program began at the Portsmouth site in 1989 to address the legacy waste from uranium enrichment activities that supported the nation’s nuclear weapons program and commercial nuclear reactors. Learn More about the Portsmouth Site>

Paducah Site

The EM mission at the Paducah Site is to complete the safe cleanup of the environmental legacy resulting from six decades of nuclear weapons development and government-sponsored nuclear energy research. Learn More about the Paducah Site>

DUF6 Conversion

DUF6 is a coproduct of the uranium enrichment process that operated for more than 60 years at the Paducah and Portsmouth Sites.  The DUF6 Conversion Project provides for conversion of DUF6 stored at the two sites into a more stable chemical form suitable for beneficial reuse or disposal.
