On August 14, 2026, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) issued emergency DOE Order No. 202-26-39, pursuant to section 202(c) of the Federal Power Act, to the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO), in coordination with Consumers Energy. The order directs MISO to ensure that the coal-fired J.H. Campbell Generating Plant (Campbell Plant) in West Olive, Michigan remains available to operate and to take every step to employ economic dispatch to minimize costs to ratepayers. The Campbell Plant was originally slated to shut down on May 31, 2025, 15 years before the end of its scheduled design life. This order is in effect beginning on August 17, 2026 through November 14, 2026.
