National Laboratories

Office of Science Laboratories

These laboratories execute long-term government missions and develop unique scientific capabilities that often extend beyond the scope of academic and industrial institutions.

NNSA Laboratories

The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) oversees three primary national laboratories which form the backbone of America's nuclear security enterprise. These world-class scientific institutions are responsible for maintaining the safety, security, and effectiveness of the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile without nuclear testing, while also conducting cutting-edge research in areas such as counterterrorism, nonproliferation, and nuclear threat reduction. Together, these laboratories employ thousands of the nation's top scientists and engineers who apply multidisciplinary expertise to solve complex national security challenges and advance scientific discovery across numerous fields.

Other National Laboratories

These laboratories play a critical role in advancing scientific frontiers, addressing national challenges, and maintaining the nation's technological competitiveness.

An outgrowth of immense investment in scientific research initiated by the U.S. Government during World War II, the National Laboratories have served as the leading institutions for scientific innovation in the United States for more than seventy years. The Energy Department's 17 National Labs tackle the critical scientific challenges of our time -- from combating climate change to discovering the origins of our universe -- and possess unique instruments and facilities, many of which are found nowhere else in the world. They address large scale, complex research and development challenges with a multidisciplinary approach that places an emphasis on translating basic science to innovation.
