Amos and Mountaineer Coal Plant Modernization and Resiliency Program — Appalachian Power Company (Letart, West Virginia and Winfield, West Virginia) plans to perform critical upgrades at two coal-fired plants in West Virginia: the Mountaineer Power Plant in Letart and the John E. Amos Power Plant in Winfield. At the Mountaineer Power Plant, the upgrades aim to enhance efficiency and power output, boost overall plant reliability, and improve environmental compliance. At the John E. Amos Power Plant, the improvements will lead to enhanced unit efficiency; reduced fuel, operating, and maintenance costs; increased beneficial reuse of waste materials; and improved environmental performance.
Modernization of Cardinal Units 1 & 2: Enhancing Efficiency and Rural Energy Reliability — Buckeye Power Inc. (Brilliant, Ohio) intends to focus on Cardinal Plant coal-fired Units 1 and 2. The project involves a comprehensive suite of upgrades and replacements targeting critical systems. Extensive modernizations aim to enhance long-term reliability and affordability for rural customers by minimizing forced outages, improving heat rate and overall operational efficiency, and ensuring environmental compliance. The upgrades will extend the operational life of critical components, reduce maintenance costs, and provide stable, secure power.
Belews Creek Coal Reliability Assurance Initiative — Duke Energy Carolinas LLC (Sauratown Township, North Carolina) plans to update the Belews Creek Steam Station in Stokes County, North Carolina, to ensure reliable and affordable energy for rural and remote communities. Belews Creek Units 1 and 2 are coal-fired units, and this initiative will upgrade various components of both units to address reliability needs. These improvements will increase the availability factor of the plant, add generation capacity, and deliver a return on investment.
Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) at Ghent Coal-Fired Generating Station — Kentucky Utilities Corporation (Ghent, Kentucky) intends to undertake a project at the coal-fired Ghent Generating Station in Ghent, Kentucky. The upgrades are projected to enable year-round operability, increasing Unit 2’s annual capacity factor. The project will enhance dispatch flexibility, support economic development and load growth, and maintain safe, reliable, and cost-effective electricity production. Furthermore, the project aims to support workforce stability at the Ghent Generating Station and in the regional coal industry.
Fort Martin Coal Handling Optimization — Monongahela Power Company (Maidsville, West Virginia) plans to focus on the Fort Martin Power Station, which consists of two coal-fired generating units, to maintain power generation reliability and resiliency. The upgrades will ensure stable and efficient coal processing, improve overall plant efficiency and lower fuel costs per unit of electricity. They will also reduce operating and maintenance costs, extend the operational life of the plant, and improve fuel supply stability, ultimately contributing to energy affordability.
Kyger Creek Station Modernization and Resiliency Project — Ohio Valley Electric Corporation (Cheshire, Ohio) intends to begin work on the Kyger Creek Station Modernization and Resiliency Project, focusing on all five coal-fired generating units at the Kyger Creek Station in Cheshire, Ohio. Comprehensive modernizations aim to significantly enhance the plant’s operational efficiency, reliability, and overall power generation capacity. Ultimately, these efforts will contribute to the affordability and security of the national power grid by improving unit reliability, reducing unplanned downtime, and increasing power generation.
