Sessions

October 1, 2024

  • 10:00-11:30AM - Broadening Participation in Science Discovery and Innovation by U.S. Department of Energy
    • The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) mission is to ensure America’s security and prosperity by addressing its energy, environmental, and nuclear challenges through transformative science and innovative technology solutions. To fulfill its mission, DOE invests in STEM training opportunities, including, but not limited to, research and technical internships at DOE National Laboratories and sites, experiential learning opportunities, participation in science and technology focused competitions, and scholarships and fellowships in high-need workforce development areas. Likewise, the DOE Office of Science (SC) invests in research at academic institutions, DOE National Laboratories across the U.S. DOE actively engages Minority Serving Institutions (MSI) and individuals from historically underrepresented groups to enable equitable access to the STEM training and research funding opportunities and to break down barriers for pursuing STEM careers.

This session will focus on sharing the opportunities for DOE-sponsored STEM training and research opportunities with NOBCChE attendees. In the first half of this two-panel session, the panel discussion will focus on funding and training opportunities such as Reaching a New Energy Sciences Workforce (RENEW), Funding for Accelerated, Inclusive Research (FAIR), and early career opportunities supported by DOE’s Office of Science. Program administrators will serve as panelists and will provide information and answer questions from attendees.  In the second half of this two-panel session, students and faculty will share their experiences participating in hands-on research opportunities in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering areas at the DOE National Laboratories through training programs sponsored by the DOE Office of Science’s Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists.

October 2, 2024

  • 10:00-11:30AM - Grant Writing Workshop with the U.S. Department of Energy
    • The Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM) within the U.S. Department of Energy has the mission of minimizing the environmental impacts of fossil fuels and industrial processes while working to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. FECM serves the University Training and Research (UTR) program, which funds early-stage R&D and student and workforce development at U.S. colleges and universities, and has a sub-program that funds projects specifically at HBCUs and other Minority-Serving Institutions.

Attend this workshop to learn about FECM’s funding opportunity process and receive guidance and insights into the merit review process associated with FECM’s opportunities, including the UTR program.
