WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Tuesday, May 23, the Office of Legacy Management (LM) rolled out its fiscal year (FY) 2018 budget request of approximately $155 million. This FY 2018 budget request is approximately $13 million below the FY 2016 enacted budget and at a similar level of our funding available in FY 2017. This funding decrease between FY 2016 and FY 2018 levels will not impact LM’s ability to carry out its post-closure responsibilities at its 90+ sites. The FY 2018 budget fully funds post-retirement benefits and addresses increased site maintenance requirements. It realizes the reduction in administration costs resulting from improved management of pensions and post-retirement benefits.

“Legacy Management will continue to keep the promises made to our Cold War communities and former workers, optimizing every dollar entrusted to us to meet our mission,” stated Carmelo Melendez, Director of LM.

LM’s FY 2018 request provides the resources necessary for LM to continue the following mission-related activities:

  • performing long-term surveillance and maintenance (LTS&M) at over 90 sites;
  • providing funding for payment of post-retirement benefits to over 10,000 former DOE contractor employees;
  • supporting remaining pension plans for closure sites;
  • managing records and information;
  • strengthening cybersecurity efforts;
  • pursuing beneficial reuse of properties;
  • managing infrastructure and facilities at LM sites;
  • engaging the public and performing public education and outreach; and
  • supporting an interagency agreement to address abandoned defense-related uranium mines

The amount of funding requested is also sufficient for LM to address its growing site responsibilities and requirements going forward.
