WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) has issued a Request for Information (RFI) titled “Transformational AI Capabilities for National Security.” This RFI, released just one week after President Trump’s historic Executive Order launching the Genesis Mission, underscores NNSA’s commitment to deploying and rapidly advancing artificial intelligence (AI) to strengthen national security and maintain America’s strategic edge.

“NNSA is at the forefront of leveraging cutting-edge technology to safeguard our nation,” said NNSA Administrator Brandon Williams. “President Trump’s Genesis Mission provides a clear mandate, and we are responding with immediate action. This RFI is a critical step in harnessing the immense power of AI to enact the White House’s vision for America to lead in every aspect of AI.”

The Genesis Mission, as outlined in the Executive Order issued on November 24, 2025, calls for a dedicated national effort to unleash AI-accelerated innovation and discovery. NNSA’s proactive issuance of this RFI demonstrates its leadership in executing this vital directive within its unique mission space, including accelerating nuclear weapons development timelines and enhancing nuclear nonproliferation efforts around the globe.

This RFI seeks input from a broad spectrum of innovators, including cutting-edge AI model developers, cloud environment providers, think tanks, universities, and other interested entities. The goal is to foster long-term collaborations to integrate transformative AI capabilities into NNSA’s critical operations.

Key areas of focus for the RFI include:

  • Capabilities for Classified AI Development and Deployment
  • Data Curation and Management for AI Training
  • AI Model Development and Enhancement
  • Partnership Models and Operational Considerations

NNSA is dedicated to fostering partnerships with industry and academia to develop self-improving AI models for advanced physics and engineering, ensuring the United States remains globally competitive and secure in the age of AI. Responses to the RFI are due by January 23, 2026.

“Our response to the Genesis Mission is a testament to NNSA’s dedication to innovation and our unwavering commitment to national security,” Administrator Williams added. “We are ready to work with the brightest minds across the nation to ensure that America continues to lead in AI and its critical applications.”
