WASHINGTON — The Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) has approved Critical Decision-4, signifying the completion of the UPF PSF Subproject at the Y-12 National Security Complex.

“With the completion of the Process Support Facilities at UPF, the team is one step closer to delivering this critical project for the nation,” said Nicole Nelson-Jean, NNSA Associate Administrator for the Office of Infrastructure. “I appreciate the dedication of the NNSA Y-12 Acquisition and Project Management Office, the NNSA Y-12 Field Office, Consolidated Nuclear Security, LLC (CNS) and Bechtel as they continue to build this vital facility.”

UPF’s multiple-building approach allows each facility to be constructed to the safety and security requirements appropriate to each building. PSF is a non-nuclear facility and was built to commercial standards, which is cost effective and increases operational efficiencies.

PSF was completed safely, without lost time or recordable injury.

“Completing this facility in line with our core project value—ensuring every team member goes home safely each day—took the full commitment of the entire UPF team,” said Rick Holmes, CNS UPF Project Director. “I’m proud to be part of a team that’s making history every day.”

The PSF subproject included the building’s construction, equipment installation, and systems testing. The 24,000 square foot building is accompanied by a gas storage yard that houses vaporizers, tanks, control valve stations, and supporting electrical equipment for UPF.

UPF will support Y-12’s key missions and will ensure the long-term viability, safety and security of enriched uranium capabilities in the United States.

PSF is the fifth of seven UPF subprojects to be completed, following Site Readiness, Site Infrastructure and Services, the Substation, and the Mechanical Electrical Building.

The remaining subprojects under construction are the Main Process Building and the Salvage and Accountability Building.
