The Sustainability Performance Office (SPO) sponsors the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Sustainability Awards to recognize outstanding sustainability contributions of individuals and teams at DOE facilities across the country. The DOE Sustainability Awards celebrate excellence in energy, water, waste, fleet, sustainable acquisition, and resilience, as well as achievements in projects representing exemplary sustainability practices.

Congratulations to our 2023 DOE Sustainability Award winners! Nominations for the 2024 awards will open early summer 2024. All nominations must be submitted through the DOE Sustainability Dashboard

High Performance Sustainable Building Awards

Starting in FY 2020, SPO has presented High Performance Sustainable Building awards in recognition of buildings that achieved the Guiding Principles in the previous fiscal year.

Green Fleet Awards

Starting in FY 2023, the Office of Management awarded grants for sites to use toward installing electric vehicle charging infrastructure. These grants went to the sites who replaced eligible replacement leases with the most light-duty ZEVs. 

Other Federal Sustainability Award Opportunities


The Presidential Federal Sustainability Awards Program celebrates the extraordinary leadership, innovation, and achievement of Federal agencies and their employees toward the ambitious sustainability goals established in the Federal Sustainability Plan and Executive Order 14057. Federal programs, projects, project teams, facilities, and individuals are eligible for nomination by their agency.

DOE’s Chief Sustainability Officer submitted DOE award nominations in June 2023. CEQ will announce the award winners sometime Fall/Winter 2023. 


The Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) sponsors the Federal Energy and Water Management Awards to recognize individuals and organizations for significant contributions to energy and water efficiency within the federal government.

FEMP has announced the winners of the 2022 Federal Energy and Water Management Awards. Read more about the award-winners from eight federal agencies.

The 2023 winners will be announced in-person at an awards ceremony at Energy Exchange 2024, March 26-28, 2024 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  


The Federal Energy Management Program invites federal agency representatives to nominate energy champions for the FEDS Spotlight award. The 2023 winners were announced during FEMP 50, a two-day celebration of 50 years of federal energy management in Washington, D.C. This year SPO’s own Isabelle Heilman was awarded one of the FEMP Spotlight Awards for her exemplary service.

Federal Green Challenge

Congratulations to the 2021 Federal Green Challenge Award Winners! The Federal Green Challenge  awards recognize the achievements of participating facilities in the categories of Adaptation, Innovation, Education & Outreach, and Leadership. From DOE, we would like to congratulate Bonneville Power Administration on their Adaptation Award!
