Background
The Burris Park, California, Site (MED/AEC Legacy Site) is located in Kings County, California, in the Central Valley south of Fresno. The site was remediated by the University of California-Davis and DOE has assumed long-term care responsibilities under the Formerly Utilized Site Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP). FUSRAP was established in 1974 to remediate sites where radioactive contamination remained from Manhattan Project and early U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) operations.
History
The U.S. Atomic Energy Commission and the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) established Burris Park as a research area called the Burris Park Field Station in 1956, and research on removing radioactive contamination from soil continued until 1963.
The cleanup activities conducted in 1963 by UC-Berkeley require no further remediation.
Final Conditions
The DOE Office of Legacy Management assumed maintenance-only responsibility for the remaining contamination in the former test plots in 2014 because the Atomic Energy Commission had authorized work at the site and no other entity has assumed responsibility for post-closure care.
