Tribal Entities can now apply to host an Energy Innovator Fellow for a one- to two-year fellowship funded by the U.S. Department of Energy.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Indian Energy (IE) has opened the Host Institution application process for the Energy Innovator Fellowship (EIF), a program that offers recent graduates and early-career professionals a valuable educational opportunity to collaborate with critical energy organizations on host-driven projects. Funded in part by IE, a goal of the program is to grow Tribal energy capacity and career opportunities across the country.
“Investing in Tribal energy workforce development supports unleashing energy resources, supports energy careers, and is critical to Tribal self-determination,” said Office of Indian Energy Director Eric Mahroum. “Initiatives like the Energy Innovator Fellowship Program help Tribes build the pipeline for the next generation of Tribal energy leaders through energy sector jobs and training. Workforce starts with education and we’re proud to have supported so many emerging energy innovators throughout Indian Country.”
Since 2024, IE has supported 14 host Tribes and organizations by placing 20 fellows across Indian Country. IE has supported host organizations like Tribal governments, including natural resources departments, Tribal Colleges and Tribal utilities, and intertribal organizations. Fellows work on an array of projects, including critical minerals, energy affordability, load growth and flexibility system planning, local energy systems, transmission and distribution, as well as Tribal energy issues.
Fellows are also involved in many different phases of project development including feasibility studies, energy strategy, energy planning, demonstration, and deployment. Fellows have even worked on standing up Tribal utilities and developing energy curriculum to further advance the energy workforce.
Host institution applications are due Oct. 2, 2026, at 3 p.m. ET.
