Kyle Haustveit was confirmed as the 16th Assistant Secretary for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Hydrocarbons and Geothermal Energy Office (HGEO) on September 18, 2025. In this role, Mr. Haustveit oversees HGEO and the National Energy Technology Laboratory’s research and development portfolio in hydrocarbon (coal, oil, and natural gas) and geothermal resources to provide affordable, reliable, and secure energy.

Prior to joining the U.S. Department of Energy, Mr. Haustveit held various technical and leadership roles at Devon Energy. A North Dakota native and third-generation energy worker, he maintains a strong connection to both the energy and agriculture sectors.

Throughout his career, he has led teams responsible for developing and commercializing diagnostic techniques used globally to optimize hydraulic fracturing and resource development. Subsequently, he directed an Energy Ventures team focused on investments in next-generation energy technologies, including geothermal, carbon utilization, and produced water treatment.

Mr. Haustveit holds a degree in petroleum engineering from Montana Tech and an MBA in energy from the University of Oklahoma.
