Map of FECM Offices and Labs

The National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) is the lead field center for the Hydrocarbons and Geothermal Energy Office's research and development program. NETL is DOE’s only government-owned, government-operated National Laboratory focused on advancing the nation’s energy future.

NETL has offices in Morgantown, WV, Pittsburgh, PA, Houston, TX, Albany, OR, and Anchorage, AK. Scientists at its Pittsburgh, PA, and Morgantown, WV campuses conduct onsite research while contract administrators oversee nearly 700 federally-sponsored projects conducted by private sector research partners. The Houston, TX office is part of the Laboratory's Strategic Center for Natural Gas and Oil. NETL's Arctic Energy Office in Anchorage, AK, facilitates energy research related to hydrocarbon resources and remote electrical power generation to address the state of Alaska's unique energy needs. Researchers in Albany, OR are specialists in advanced materials with particular expertise in wear and corrosion, melting and casting, and materials development.

The Hydrocarbons and Geothermal Energy Office is establishing Centers of Excellence at each NETL campus aligned with key industry interests and serve as dedicated hubs for collaboration, connecting stakeholders with laboratory capabilities, facilities, and multidisciplinary teams best aligned to support their goals.

The Centers of Excellence are anchored at NETL’s facilities in:

  • Morgantown, West Virginia (coal)
