The K East Reactor operated from 1955 to 1971 and is the seventh of Hanford’s nine former reactors to be protected in an enclosure, or cocooned. The Columbia River Basin Chapter of the Project Management Institute recently honored the cocooning project as its 2023 Project of the Year. Standing Tall: Hanford Reactor Cocoon Voted Local Project of the Year

An EM priority project in 2022 continues to earn accolades in 2023.

Attendees to a recent meeting on efforts to collaborate in science and technology fields to enhance national security included U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson and others from a delegation from offices representing a majority of the U.S. congressional districts in South Carolina; a staff member from U.S. Sen. Tim Scott’s office; and Maj. Gen. Van McCarty, the adjutant general and head of the South Carolina Military Department.

Oak Ridge Honors Small Businesses for Critical Role in Cleanup

Oak Ridge Office of Environmental Management (OREM) cleanup contractor UCOR recognized six small businesses at a ceremony last week for their support of EM’s cleanup mission.

UCOR President and CEO Ken Rueter, at left, and Tennessee Technical University President Phil Oldham sign an agreement formalizing a partnership between the school and the contractor. UCOR will provide resources and expertise to the university as it develops its curriculum. The contractor will also offer internship and career opportunities for students.

DOE’s Spent Nuclear Fuel Working Group Reconvenes in Idaho

A working group recently addressed policy and crosscutting issues impacting the handling, storage and disposition of DOE-managed spent nuclear fuel (SNF) in its first in-person meeting since late 2019.

April Barbin, a science, technology, engineering, arts and math teacher at Cedar Ridge Elementary in Grovetown, Georgia, was named a recipient of a grant award from Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS) during a recent celebration. Educators from the greater Aiken-Augusta area recently received grants ranging from $500 to $1,000 from the SRNS Innovative Teaching Mini Grants Program.

Savannah River Site Contractor’s Total Grant Awards to Teachers Approach $1 Million

A DOE Office of Environmental Management contractor at the Savannah River Site (SRS) awarded 114 local educators grants ranging from $500 to $1,000 during a recent celebration.
