Young girls in blue hard hats take place in a STEM camp at the Hanford Sire

RICHLAND, Wash. — A prime contractor at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Environmental Management Hanford Site recently partnered with the National Association of Women in Construction to help young women explore and develop skills in the construction trades at the Girls Rock in the Trades (GRITT) Camp.

Over four days, campers explored welding, carpentry, electrical work and more — guided by skilled mentors who showed them what a future in the construction and trade industry can look like. The campers walked away with new skills, confidence and a belief in their own potential.

Bechtel National Inc. was the GRITT camp’s premier sponsor for the third year in a row and provided the campers with new personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves and eye protection, ensuring every camper was equipped to work safely. The emphasis on PPE reinforced a safety-first mindset as a foundation for success — both at camp and in future careers.

The GRITT camp was created by the Tri-Cities, Washington, chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction and has been hosted each year by Tri-Tech Skills Center, a local trade school.

A video highlighting the camp can be seen here.
