A group of seven contractors and 20 utility programs that participate in the federal Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® program are among those receiving awards for outstanding leadership in reducing American energy bills and confronting climate change.

The 2022 ENERGY STAR award winners, selected by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), are being given to approximately 200 organizations involved in the ENERGY STAR program. This includes Fortune 500 companies, manufacturers, utilities, home builders, school districts, retailers, commercial building owners, operators, contractors, energy score raters, and other stakeholders across the country.

Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® (HPwES), a national program administered by DOE, brings together utilities, energy programs, and their network of trained home performance contractors to offer energy-efficiency improvements to customers that reduce energy bills and provide cleaner air inside the home.

HPwES award winners helped increase the operation of homes across the United States through both small measures, such as sealing windows to stop air leaks, and large-scale improvements, like adding heat pump water heaters or solar panels. In addition to reducing energy bills by an average of $500 a year, improvements by contractors and HPwES sponsors can lead to lower carbon emissions. As the energy sector works to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by 2050, ENERGY STAR winners in the HPwES program continue to maximize energy-saving opportunities in homes across the U.S. Additional accomplishments in 2021 include:

  • Increasing participation by delivering more than $1 million in rebates and marketing programs in both English and Spanish
  • Teaming up with nonprofits to provide free home energy assessments and efficiency improvements in low- and moderate-income households
  • Offering free training, apprentice programs and equipment to contractors interested in joining the HPwES contractor network
  • Providing low-cost financing for efficiency upgrades
  • Increasing energy savings over the previous year by as much as 10 percent
  • Livestreaming on Facebook and sharing videos on YouTube to reach new audiences
