Description
Today the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) awarded five of its Clean Energy Manufacturing Innovation Institutes with funds to accelerate the development, deployment, and scale-up of education and workforce development (EWD) programs that support the future labor needs of American manufacturing. Specifically, this funding will be used to expand EWD services to broader communities across our nation and meet the future labor needs of industries that are projected to rapidly expand in the immediate future, as America continues its shift to a clean energy economy. Education and workforce development are fundamental to building the robust domestic clean energy manufacturing sector needed to achieve the Biden-Harris Administration’s climate goals.
Projects
Project Name: Smart Manufacturing Credential Aligned Community College Instructor Academy
Award Amount: $1 Million
Partners: Amatrol, Inc.; Texas A&M University; the Smart Automation Certification Alliance (SACA)
Project Objectives: Expand Smart Manufacturing educator training programs to prepare students for Smart Automation Certification Alliance (SACA) certifications. Further expand Texas A&M University’s (TAMU) Instructor Professional Development Academy to include instructors from colleges throughout Texas.
Project Name: Cybersecurity Modular Bootcamp
Award Amount: $1 Million
Partners: Idaho National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, University of Texas at San Antonio, Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute (CESMII), Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation (IACMI)
Project Objectives: Develop and deploy an operational technology (industrial control systems) bootcamp for small and medium manufacturers focusing on incumbent and emerging members of the workforce to identify and reduce cyber threats.
Project Name: Advanced Composites Career Pathways Program
Award Amount: $1 Million
Partners: Manufacturers Edge, Colorado’s Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) Center, Colorado Advanced Manufacturing Association, National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Metropolitan State University, Michigan State University, Michigan Economic Development Corporation, Society of Plastics Engineers, IACMI’s Scale Up Research Facility (SuRF)
Project Objectives: Expand the Advanced Composites Career Pathways Program to support two additional delivery sites within proximity to Department of Energy key sectors in Colorado and Michigan at a post-secondary location.
Project Name: Semiconductor Chip Fabrication and Technology Bootcamp
Award Amount: $250,000
Partners: North Caroline Clean Energy Technology Center (NCCETC), North Caroline State Nanofabrication Facility, The High Voltage Laboratory, North Carolina State FREEDM Systems Center
Project Objectives: Interface with local chip manufacturers to identify workforce training needs and create a boot camp training with hands on training opportunities using shared teaching labs and clean rooms.
Institute Name: The Reducing Embodied Energy and Decreasing Emissions (REMADE) Institute
Project Name: Circular Economy Workforce Training for Remanufacturing and E-scrap Industries
Award Amount: $380,000
Partners: Rochester Institute of Technology, Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, Remanufacturing Industries Council
Project Objectives: Develop bi-lingual online workforce training for roles in the remanufacturing and e-scrap industries that do not require four-year degrees.
