The U.S Department of Energy, in collaboration with the Cybersecurity Manufacturing Innovation Institute (CyManII), has selected 10 projects that align with the Biden-Harris Administration's vision for achieving net-zero-emissions economy by 2050. With a combined total of $4.8 million in research and development funding, these projects are primed to bolster cybersecurity in the U.S. manufacturing sector.
Industrial Control Systems

Description:
CyManII in partnership with GE Research aims to demonstrate cybersecurity innovations in critical ICS manufacturing processes using CyManII technologies. The team consisting of George Mason University, Purdue University, Sealevel Systems, the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Texas at San Antonio, CyManII, and GE Research will provide additional security to the next generation distributed industrial control system (Mark VIe) with broad applications across other critical ICS manufacturing processes, products, and field operations.

Partnering with CyManII, this team will harness AI to model the complex interconnections among vulnerabilities and weaknesses to formalize the consequences of multiple attack scenarios creating relevant risk mitigation strategies of ICS systems.

Kry10 Corporation is partnering with CyManII to create a formally verified reference architecture based on the Kry10 embedded microkernel platform (the near-minimum amount of software that can provide the mechanisms needed for ICS implementation). This will provide manufacturers with an ICS foundation that is secure-by-design for multiple industries and uses.

Description:
The Michigan Technical University is working with CyManII to securely digitalize an energy intensive process, composite thermal curing, for the creation of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) rebar. Partnering with Automation Alley, Corsha, Neuvokas, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, and CyManII, this team will show how securely digitalizing this process can save composite manufacturing facilities each over 2500 kilowatt-hours of energy per month.

CyManII is working with Authentise to build a secure real-time measurement system specifically to detect if malicious third parties have infiltrated an AM system to adjust or introduce defects, which would otherwise be undetectable during manufacture. Partnering with Addiguru, i3DMFG, and CyManII, this team will demonstrate multiple verification data streams based on the digital model build file, all integrated into the CyManII developed Cyber-Physical Passport. This system will not only improve cyber security, but also aid AM manufacturers in their ability to improve manufacturing quality assurance approaches and workflows.

By analyzing powerline data, the project seeks to identify and prevent cyber incursions, drawing parallels to network traffic anomaly detection. This approach involves measuring baseline power usage, applying machine learning algorithms, and creating distinctive power signatures to distinguish normal operation from potential cyberattacks. Partnering with 3Degrees, this team will demonstrate the deployment of the CyManII developed Cyber-Physical Passport to provide assurance of design intent to manufacture. The project not only enhances cybersecurity but also optimizes energy consumption and operational efficiency in additive manufacturing, thereby offering a comprehensive solution to industry challenges.

The University of Texas San Antonio is building a software called STRAP_AM (Security Tracking and Product integrity for Additive Manufacturing) with CyManII to securely transform a modern sand-casting operation. Partnering with George Mason University, Humtown Additive, Purdue University, the University of Texas at Austin, and CyManII, this team will deploy this software in compliance with the CyManII developed Secure Defensible Architecture that optimizes both production and energy consumption.
