Secretary Brouillette provides an update on maintaining operational effectiveness under expanded telework.
March 17, 2020DOE Colleagues:
The health and safety of the entire The Department of Energy (DOE) workforce is my number one priority. As a result, and in accordance with a memorandum issued by the Office of Management and Budget, DOE will practice “social distancing” and transition to maximum telework flexibilities for employees across the DOE enterprise, including our Washington Headquarters, National Laboratories and sites around the country. During this time, the Department will remain open and operational, and all mission essential functions will continue.
I have asked our leadership team to plan for operational effectiveness of the Department while maximizing telework opportunities for the workforce. We will ensure that the Department is able to carry out its mission while substantially reducing the risk of transmission of the COVID-19 virus.
Therefore, Heads of Departmental Elements may authorize supervisors to temporarily expand telework consistent with our planning and until new guidance is communicated.
In order to respond quickly, we have streamlined our procedures so that supervisors may modify existing telework plans and authorize new telework plans solely with the exchange of emails.
Departmental Elements should also work with contracting officers and the Office of Management to maximize telework for onsite support services contractors across the complex.
The professionalism you are exhibiting as we respond to the COVID-19 outbreak has been amazing, and I want to assure you that my primary concern is your health and safety.
Please continue taking common sense precautions to prevent the spread of the virus, including washing your hands regularly. If you are feeling ill, please err on the side of caution and do not come to work regardless of your telework status.
Finally, as a reminder, the COVID-19 Hotline has been established at 202-586-COVD (202-586-2683) or by email at COVID-19inquiries@hq.doe.gov. Details can be found on the DOE COVID-19 hub: https://www.energy.gov/coronavirus-hub .
