Funding Will Advance Grid-Enhancing Technology Development

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced a $6.5 million FOA to accelerate the development of grid-enhancing technologies (GETs). The Office of Electricity (OE) and the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) are providing funding for technologies that will help improve grid reliability, optimize the electricity infrastructure in existing rights-of-way, and facilitate renewable resource interconnection and market access by improving the reliability and efficiency of power transfer.

“As part of President Biden’s plan to secure U.S. leadership in the clean energy economy and build a stronger, more resilient nation for all Americans, OE and EERE are working together to envision and accelerate the modernization of our nation’s electricity grid. This Grid-Enhancing Technologies funding opportunity invites innovators to join OE and EERE in that effort,” said Gene Rodrigues, Assistant Secretary for Electricity. “We look forward to demonstrating the capabilities of American innovations that increase the reliability and productivity of our existing grid.”

The FOA is available to applicants who will research, develop, and demonstrate innovative approaches to real-world benefits and usage of GETs. This RD&D will lead to industry adoption of next generation GETs tools and technologies that are not widely available today.

GETs, such as dynamic line rating and power flow controllers, are highly location dependent, so demonstrations are needed across a variety of systems differing in scale, geography, topology, and connected renewable generation resources.

DOE anticipates making awards with estimated periods of performance of up to three years. OE and EERE base appropriations for FY 2023 are funding the GETs program for up to $6.5 million. Each award will likely receive up to $2 million. The concept paper deadline is on or about March 16, 2023, and DOE expects to announce selections in July 2023.
