On September 18, 2026, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) issued emergency DOE Order No. 202-26-46, pursuant to section 202(c) of the Federal Power Act, to Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO) and the Midcontinent Independent System Operator, Inc. (MISO). The order directs NIPSCO and MISO to take all measures necessary to ensure that Units 17 and 18 at the R.M. Schahfer Generating Station in Wheatfield, Indiana are available to operate and to employ economic dispatch to minimize costs for the American people. The order is in effect beginning on September 20, 2026, through December 18, 2026.
