What Are Space Photovoltaics?

Space photovoltaics (PV) are materials and devices that can be used in space to convert sunlight into electrical energy to power devices from low Earth orbit to deep space. Space PV technologies provide reliable power for satellites, spacecraft, space stations, lunar missions, and other systems that operate beyond Earth's atmosphere.

Why Are Space Photovoltaics Important?

The demand for space PV power generation is growing, driven by rising interest in projects such as telecommunication satellite constellations.

Space PV also provides reliable power generation required for modern satellites, which are critical to U.S. national security.

Research in Space Photovoltaics

The U.S. Department of Energy's Integrated Energy Systems Office (IESO) supports research to improve the performance, durability, and manufacturability of space PV materials. These materials include multijunction III-V solar cells, perovskites, and silicon PV, each of which offer different advantages depending on the mission, operating environment, and performance requirements.

This work supports future space missions while strengthening U.S. leadership in PV innovation and manufacturing. IESO’s latest research and development work includes:
