August 26, 2026The Cooling Operations Optimized for Leaps in Energy, Reliability, and Carbon Hyperefficiency for Information Processing Systems 1.5 (COOLERCHIPS 1.5) Program consists of projects selected from the first phase of the COOLERCHIPS program for additional funding, extended period of performance, and new project milestones to continue development of water-free, advanced cooling systems for high-power data centers demanded by artificial intelligence (AI). Specifically, the COOLERCHIPS 1.5 project teams will expand, test, and validate cooling systems (both primary and secondary loops) that can manage heat loads of 1 megawatt per rack for AI applications, and verify energy usage, cooling capacity, and overall efficiency. ARPA-E will choose a common location for 7 of the project teams to conduct final system testing. A single performer, the University of Maryland, will provide software and support for project teams during the final system testing process. If successful, COOLERCHIPS 1.5 projects will enable technologies that use less energy and no water for cooling data centers, supporting energy abundance and ultimately reducing dependence on foreign energy, thereby increasing U.S. energy security.
