Background

The Kerr-Philpott system consists of the John H. Kerr and Philpott projects developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers primarily as multi-purpose storage projects for flood control and power. The operations of the projects also provide benefits for water supply, fish and wildlife preservation, recreation and navigation. Collectively, the projects provide 3 million-acre feet of flood control storage and 106 miles of navigation channel. The combined total installed nameplate capacity of the projects is 218,000 megawatts, which generate an average of 465,000 megawatt-hours annually under normal operating conditions.
