Matt Ramsey of EHSS-12 Graduates from Excellence in Government Fellows Program

Mr. Matthew Ramsey of the Office of Worker Safety and Health Assistance (EHSS-12) recently graduated from the Excellence in Government Fellows Program. This program, offered by Partnership for Public Service, has helped develop strong leadership skills through application-based learning, highly interactive activities, authentic self-reflection, personalized coaching and governmentwide networking for over 30 years. Graduates go on to plan, design, and implement innovative solutions to address the federal government’s biggest challenges and improve their agencies’ effectiveness.

The year-long program includes 27 days of interactive class sessions in addition to up to five hours per week devoted to assigned team projects, all completed while participants remain in their full-time federal civil service roles. It covers topics to include Leading People, Strategic Systems Leadership, Building Partnerships and Coalitions, and Navigating Change. Mr. Ramsey said of the program that “coming from a background including operations management, engineering supervision, and project management roles, I was skeptical that the program would offer any new concepts that hadn’t been addressed in my previous leadership training and experience”. However, he said he came away from the program with a great appreciation for the value EIG provides to current and aspiring government leaders. Because he is a member of the Department of Energy Voluntary Protection Program (DOE-VPP) assessment team, Mr. Ramsey chose the virtual cohort option to flex around his normal travel responsibilities. He said that this challenged his organizational and time management skills while still achieving his goal of networking with high-performers and managers in peer agencies, especially considering adapting his management style in the current environment of remote work and generational workforce change. Overall, Mr. Ramsey says that he is “very appreciative of my EHSS leadership for investing in me and supporting my opportunity to participate in EIG,” noting that he has already applied some of the techniques he learned to his current role as a General Engineer.

Mr. Ramsey now plans to leverage the skills and strategies he learned in the EIG Fellows Program to improve and find efficiencies in the DOE-VPP.
