Workshop: Industrial Decarbonization: Renewable Process Heating from Concentrating Solar Thermal

September 14-15, 2021, 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO), in collaboration with the Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO) and the Hydrogen and Fuel Cells Technology Office (HFTO), hosted a workshop on decarbonizing industrial processes using concentrating solar-thermal (CST) power. This workshops aims to identify the most promising technology pathways and key performance metrics for CST to provide renewable, high-temperature heat to industries like iron ore reduction and steel manufacture, cement production, and ammonia synthesis.

The workshop featured discussions on research, development, and demonstration of CST technologies to deliver heat to difficult-to-decarbonize industrial processes, with or without associated electricity production. It included DOE presentations on strategic priorities and objectives, as well as panels of experts from relevant industries to help define the research, planning, and execution challenges that must be overcome. You can find the full agenda below.

Researchers from industry, academia, and the National Laboratories, as well as technology developers, plant operators and owners, investors, and representatives of traditionally underrepresented communities were encouraged to attend to provide a breadth of perspectives to explore the challenges and opportunities for using CST heat input as a replacement for fossil-fuel-based heat sources in high temperature industrial processes.
