Energy Department Awards $200,000 to Small Geothermal Business

This week, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced $200,000 in funding for a new Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) geothermal project. The project is one of 110 Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy projects recently funded through DOE’s SBIR/STTR programs. These programs, managed by DOE’s Office of Science, engage diverse American small businesses and entrepreneurs to develop innovative and cutting-edge technologies to help support the national energy economy. 

Greenpath Systems LLC, the Geothermal Technologies Office (GTO) selectee, will investigate and develop geopolymer grouts enhanced by nano-material fillers to be used in the completion of subsurface wells for geothermal/ground source heat pumps. These grouts show promise for reducing well completion costs as well as overall project costs for installation and operation. Ultimately, the project will help reduce the carbon footprint of residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.
