The Babylon Wildfire is currently burning near the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Monticello, Utah, Disposal and Processing Sites. There is no risk of radioactive material release. The former uranium processing site was cleaned up in the 1990s, and radioactive materials are securely contained within an engineered disposal cell designed to withstand natural disasters, including fire. The DOE Monticello site team is actively coordinating with emergency responders, who are fully trained in site conditions and safety protocols.
Remediation at the Monticello Sites was conducted in accordance with Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) and/or Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) regulations. The sites transferred to the Office of Legacy Management in 2003 and require operation and maintenance of remedial action systems, routine inspection and maintenance, records-related activities, and stakeholder support.
