September 23, 2019Nearly 90% of the lithium-ion battery manufacturing capacity in the United States in 2016 was for the automotive sector, accounting for nearly 20% of global automotive lithium-ion battery capacity. China had 44% of the world’s automotive lithium-ion battery manufacturing capacity and 63% of all lithium-ion battery capacity. Four countries – China, the United States, Japan, and South Korea – accounted for 97% of all lithium-ion battery capacity in 2016. Learn more about DOE’s lithium-ion battery work here.
