Arizona State University proposes to use federal funding to research the viability of using biochemical conversion as a strategy for converting algal biomass into lipid-based and carbohydrate-based biofuels and to test the feasibility of replacing petroleum based fuels. This project will include feedstock production and development of algal strains for conversion and fuel production, chemical characterization of the algal composition and structure, identify and test pretreatment options for hydrolytic enzyme preparation, chemical analysis and basic property for fuel production and stability analysis of algal derived fuel components.
