The U.S. Department of Energy is proposing to provide funding to the State of Louisiana-Department of Natural Resources to replace existing non-adjustable pumps and motors with variable frequency drive (VFD) pumps and motors at the 24th & Delaware lift station in the city of Kenner with newer units that utilize variable frequency drives in order to save up to 75% on energy use at this station thereby reducing the energy bill for the city by 6%. This is a large facility and accepts flows from 15 upstream lift stations, including the newly constructed terminal at the New Orleans International Airport.

The proposed project activities include replacement of the existing pumps and motors with two 150-hp and two 300-hp VFD pumps, motor changers, two transducers, and the necessary electrical upgrades. The new equipment would be retrofitted into existing space already occupied by pumps and motors. Any additional piping and control modifications needed to retrofit the improved pumping system would be installed in spaces already occupied by the existing system. The proposed project would not alter the capacity, use, mission or operation of the existing facility. The contractor completing the facility improvements is required to obtain all necessary permits prior to beginning work. With the exception of the replaced equipment, the proposed project would not generate a waste stream. All waste would be disposed of according to local, state and federal regulations. The facility uses electric power for operation; therefore hazardous emissions are not expected as a result of the proposed project.
